Description: The arumahani and abaimahani are two traditional acapella song genres sung by the Garifuna, an ethnic group of mixed Arawak, African and Carib ancestry originating on the island of St. Vincents in the eastern Caribbean. The arumahani, a genre traditionally sung by men, is particularly endangered because of the large scale emigration of men to North American cities like Los Angeles, New Orleans and New York. Here, we explore the maintenance of arumahani and abeimahani as well as its composition, performance, and social context through a series of recorded performances and interviews with practitioners and other experts. The fieldwork was carried out in Belize and in New York City, which hosts the largest Garifuna population anywhere outside Central America.
