Title: MR Milyarryarr 'Egret' songs

Description: Three Milyarryarr songs (spirit language) performed by Johnny Namayiwa and Johnny Namarruda (didjeridu) at a menarche ceremony for a girl (Janet) at Warruwi. The songs were performed as Janet was brought out of the shade painted and decorated. Many other young girls were also painted up for the ceremony and many other women (including Janet's mother and mother's sisters) were also present. Isabel O'Keeffe (née Bickerdike) has photographs of the occasion, but needs to consult with the girl, her family and other community members before they are archived. (Notes: IB01-01_03 are excerpted song files from 20061004IB01. Original recording is 24bit 96khz stereo. Excerpted song files are 16bit 44.1khz stereo. Recording equipment: Roland Edirol R-4 Four channel portable recorder and WAVE editor; rode NT4 microphone & rycote windshield)

Description: The classical song traditions of Western Arnhem Land are amongst the foremost examples of verbal art in the nine endangered languages of the region, but few people are now competent to perform or comment on them. Typically performed in multi-lingual social contexts, song texts demonstrate unusual linguistic features such as mixtures of languages and a high proportion of esoteric and intimate vocabulary. We will collect, transcribe, translate and analyse song texts and discussions about songs by contemporary performers, and where relevant repatriate and document archival recordings, making our research results available to communities via a network of local digital repositories.
