Title:
Tsuut'ina conversations: Alex Crowchild, Harley Crowchild, and Bruce Starlight
Description:
Conversations in Tsuut'ina between Alex Crowchild, Harley Crowchild, and Bruce Starlight, recorded in a meeting room at the Grey Eagle Resort and Casino, Tsuut'ina Nation. These conversations were recorded in four parts, with the contributing Elders taking short breaks between each one. Three of these parts have been transcribed, translated, and prepared for deposit, and cover the following topics: 1. In part one, Alex Crowchild and Bruce Starlight begin by discussing the purpose of this project, as well as the Tsuut'ina terms for "sweetgrass", "grass", and "hay". Alex Crowchild then proceeds to discuss being in nature and praying, with Harley Crowchild joining the group at the end of this recording. 2. In part two, Alex Crowchild continues his story about being in nature and praying, mentioning an encounter with a bear that leads to some short discussion of bear encounters. He then continues to discuss signs in nature that indicate that a cold winter is to come, which prompts discussion of the Tsuut'ina term for "(Canada) geese". 3. In part four, the conversation starts with group discussion of several Tsuut'ina words and expressions, continuing from an unrecorded conversation that began during the immediately preceding break. Harley Crowchild then continues to discuss past experiences with sweat lodges and Pipe Ceremonies, with some separate discussion of the Tsuut'ina term for "mittens"/"screech owl", pointing, and hand gestures. The conversation then shifts to historical discussion of the signing of Treaty 7 at Blackfoot Crossing in 1877 and the advice of a medicine man as to how to handle the government representatives, as well as a demonstration of medicine power. He continues to recount a short, humorous anecdote about a white store owner from Montana attending a funeral in a nearby Native American community. Alex Crowchild then discusses a personal experience in a sweat lodge involving the spirit of Bull Head, a past Chief of the Tsuut'ina Nation. As in other sessions in this collection, each of these parts is represented by a set of files that provide the primary video (A) and audio (B) recordings of the original conversations, a corresponding time-aligned transcript (C), and a set of oral annotations (D): A. Video recordings of each conversation were made simultaneously on two cameras, one recording the entire scene (at 4K resolution; file names ending in "-C1.ṃp4") and another recording individual contributors with tighter framing (at 1080p resolution; file names ending in "-C2.ṃp4") B. Audio recordings of each conversation were made using two to three separate lavalier microphones, each used to record the speech of a single contributor on a separate mono track (file names ending in "-Tr1.wav", "-Tr2.wav", and "-Tr3.wav"). A stereo mix-down of these three tracks is also included (file names ending in ".wav" without a preceding "-Tr" identifier). C. Bilingual (Tsuut'ina-English), time-aligned transcripts of the audio and video of each part of conversation session were prepared using ELAN (file names ending in "_YYYYMMDD.eaf" and "_YYYYMMDD.pfsx" , where YYYYMMDD represents the date when this transcript was deposited). D. Oral annotations were audio-recorded and transcribed using SayMore for each part of this conversation session, offering slow, careful repetitions of Tsuut'ina utterances in the original conversation recordings and/or oral free translations of the same utterances into English. The oral annotations produced for each part of this conversation were exported from SayMore as uncompressed, three-channel LPCM audio (with the first channel preserving the audio of individual segments in the source recording being annotated, the second channel representing careful repetitions in Tsuut'ina, and the third channel representing oral free translations into English; file names ending in "_OA_YYYYMMDD.wav") and an accompanying time-aligned transcript for use in ELAN (file names ending in "_OA_YYYYMMDD.eaf", with YYYYMMDD indicating the date when this set of oral annotations was exported).
