Description: A Legacy Materials Grant from ELDP allowed the digitization of recordings and texts from Ranongga in the Western Province of Solomon Islands. This collection has three parts. 1. Ranongga Oral History. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, an Oral Histories Program was based within the Cultural Affairs Office of Western Province, in the provincial capital of Gizo. As part of this program, Ranonggan archaeologist Kenneth Roga of Ranongga recorded 11 cassettes in 1986; Australian traveller Laurence Stubbs of Australia recorded 20 cassettes in 1987 and 1992. Content of the recordings are songs, descriptions of obsolete social practices and technologies, myths, and humorous stories. Debra McDougall made copies of these cassettes in the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Studio in Gizo in 1999. The original cassettes in the Cultural Affairs Office were destroyed sometime in the 2000s.2. McDougall Recordings. Between 1998-2001, Debra McDougall recorded 85 cassettes during anthropological fieldwork. These recordings include interviews, life histories, histories of travel and settlement, traditional myths, music, church services, speeches, funerals, dispute settlement hearings, and meetings with non-governmental organisations. 3. Kulu Language Institute (KLI) texts. Since the early 2000s, students at a vernacular language school have written hundreds of stories in Kubokota and Luqa languages.
