Title: Conversations, narratives with Fride Matawa, Mateo Matawa, Chanito Matawa and Pale Washima discuss anacondas, Miguel Gomez and Chanito's recent imprisionment by the Riberalta police.

Description: In the morning we recorded a conversation between Fride Matawa, Pale Washima and Mateo Matawa (from 9 until 1). Mateo Matawa entered the conversation about 45 minutes into it and was equipped with a Shure headset micorphone about an hour into the conversation. The conversation was recorded in two parts. One where 2 tracks were recorded (Fride, Pale) and another where 3 tracks were recorded (Fride, Pale, Mateo). The video recording was made facing the manurimi river some 100 meters from Papilo and Maira's house in la Rampla. I moved the video recorder around because Fride and Pale kept adjusting the positions of their seats. I had trouble getting a good recording with the video because the speakers were on the river bank where it is slanted (I was worried the video camera would fall over). Initially the conversation continues to be about the almond business. Then it shifts into a discussion of different types of snakes (some of which appear to be mythological). They also discuss Miguel Gomez. By the evening Chanito and his family arrived from Sena. Then we went to the other side of the river where I wanted to record Javier and his father. However, they were no interested in being recorded at that time. He said later at night around 7 pm, but Pale had already told me that he wanted to be recorded about that time. We then recorded with Chanito Matawa, Fride Matawa, Mateo Matawa and Pale Washima just outside the motel rooms of La Rampla. They discussed a number of topics one of which was Chanito's recent imprisionment and escape at the hands of the Riberalta police.Miguel Gomez is a nonindigenous person from Riberalta who in some ways works in the lumber industry. He serves as the Araona's contact with the outside world, but has also been accused of stealing from the community.Papilo and Maira are the owners of the one house and restaurant at La Rampla - a docking point on the manurimi river an hour and a half from Sena.

Description: This project will produce a collection of transcribed, translated and analyzed narratives, conversations and other culturally relevant speech practices from the endangered Araona language of the Takanan family, spoken by approximately 120 to 150 people on the Manurimi and Manupari rivers in the department of la Paz, Bolivia. These materials will serve as the basis for a grammatical description of the language and a linguistically based ethnography of the Araona people. Such a project is urgent because there are currently few documentary materials (either linguistic or cultural) available on the Araona, while they face pressure to adapt to the outside because of rapid economic growth in the national economy.
