Title: IL Inyjalarrku songs - discussion 2

Description: David Manmurulu discusses Inyjalarrku songs with Isabel Bickerdike, and records several statements in Mawng about the songs. The last few songs recorded by Linda Barwick at Warruwi on 10 September 2006 (session 20060910IL) are discussed. See 20070405ILXX for discussion of previous songs on the 2006 recording. (Notes: Very bad overmodulated recording. Some of this information was later re-recorded by David Manmurulu and Isabel Bickerdike. Recording is 16bit 44.1kHz stereo. Extremely poor quality recording due to Isabel Bickerdike not having headphones to check the recording levels. Recording equipment: Marantz PMD670 recorder)

Description: The classical song traditions of Western Arnhem Land are amongst the foremost examples of verbal art in the nine endangered languages of the region, but few people are now competent to perform or comment on them. Typically performed in multi-lingual social contexts, song texts demonstrate unusual linguistic features such as mixtures of languages and a high proportion of esoteric and intimate vocabulary. We will collect, transcribe, translate and analyse song texts and discussions about songs by contemporary performers, and where relevant repatriate and document archival recordings, making our research results available to communities via a network of local digital repositories.
