Description: Here Robert Sepi, the main church leader in Iteri, leads the Sunday service at the village church. His sermon draws from John 15:1-8 about Jesus as the true vine. Because the Iteris don't have grapes, their Bible translation relies on the metaphor of a fig tree instead. Robert goes into further depth with gardening metaphors that elucidate this passage about the spiritual life of believers when they draw near to or pull away from Jesus and the relationship to their prayer lives. Linguistically, an interesting aspect of this sermon is how Robert relies on code-switching between Yaw and Tok Pisin as a rhetorical resource. Total duration of original recording: [54m]
