Summary of the collection

English: Ghandruk Sign Language (GhSL) is an indigenous village sign language used by Deaf and hearing members of the communities of Ghandruk, Hundu, Kimrong, and Chhomrong in Wards 10 and 11 of Annapurna Rural Municipality, Kaski District, western Nepal (28.376417°N, 83.810433°E), at an altitude of approximately 2,012 metres above sea level. Distinct from Nepali Sign Language, GhSL has developed naturally within the community over several generations and forms an important part of its linguistic and cultural heritage.
Community-based documentation conducted during 2024-2025 with 15 Deaf and hearing participants revealed increasing influence from Nepali Sign Language, particularly among younger generations, indicating that GhSL is undergoing language shift and faces a growing risk of endangerment. This collection builds on that earlier work by undertaking the first comprehensive audiovisual documentation of the language.
The collection documents GhSL through high-quality video recordings of natural conversations, personal narratives, life histories, traditional knowledge, local history, cultural practices, everyday communication, and elicited lexical data from approximately 30 Deaf and hearing participants. It also includes more than 200 lexical signs, annotated video recordings, metadata, informed consent documentation, participant information, photographs, field notes, transcriptions, Nepali and English translations, and sociolinguistic documentation.
The project will be carried out between August 2026 and July 2027 under the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (ELDP). All materials will be archived in the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) to ensure their long-term preservation and accessibility for community members, researchers, educators, and future generations. As one of the first comprehensive archives of an indigenous village sign language from Nepal, this collection will contribute to community-based language maintenance, sign language documentation, and research on village sign languages, Deaf communities, and linguistic diversity.

सन् २०२४-२०२५ मा १५ जना बहिरा तथा सुन्ने सहभागीहरूसँग गरिएको समुदायमा आधारित प्रारम्भिक अभिलेखीकरणले विशेषगरी नयाँ पुस्तामा नेपाली साङ्केतिक भाषाको प्रभाव बढ्दै गएको देखाएको छ । यसले घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषा भाषा परिवर्तनको प्रक्रियामा रहेको तथा भविष्यमा लोप हुने जोखिम बढ्दै गएको संकेत गर्दछ । प्रस्तुत सङ्ग्रहले सोही प्रारम्भिक कार्यलाई विस्तार गर्दै यस भाषाको पहिलो विस्तृत दृश्य-श्रव्य अभिलेखीकरण गर्ने लक्ष्य राखेको छ ।
यस सङ्ग्रहमा करिब ३० जना बहिरा तथा सुन्ने सहभागीहरूबाट प्राकृतिक संवाद, व्यक्तिगत जीवनकथा, मौखिक इतिहास, परम्परागत ज्ञान, स्थानीय इतिहास, सांस्कृतिक अभ्यास, दैनिक सञ्चार तथा शब्द सङ्कलनका उच्च गुणस्तरका भिडियो अभिलेखहरू समावेश गरिनेछन् । साथै २०० भन्दा बढी साङ्केतिक शब्दहरू, भाषिक टिप्पणी सहितका भिडियो अभिलेखहरू, मेटाडाटा, सूचित सहमति, सहभागीहरूको विवरण, तस्बिरहरू, फिल्ड नोटहरू, प्रतिलेखन, नेपाली तथा अंग्रेजी अनुवाद, र समाजभाषिक अध्ययनसम्बन्धी सामग्रीहरू पनि सङ्ग्रहमा समावेश हुनेछन् ।
यो परियोजना अगस्ट २०२६ देखि जुलाई २०२७ सम्म Endangered Languages Documentation Programme (ELDP) को सहयोगमा सञ्चालन हुनेछ । सम्पूर्ण सामग्री दीर्घकालीन संरक्षण तथा समुदाय, अनुसन्धानकर्ता, शिक्षक, विद्यार्थी र भावी पुस्ताको पहुँचका लागि Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) मा अभिलेखीकरण गरिनेछ । नेपालको स्थानीय गाउँ साङ्केतिक भाषाको पहिलो विस्तृत अभिलेखहरूमध्ये एकका रूपमा यस सङ्ग्रहले समुदायमा आधारित भाषा संरक्षण, साङ्केतिक भाषा अभिलेखीकरण तथा गाउँ साङ्केतिक भाषा, बहिरा समुदाय र भाषिक विविधतासम्बन्धी अनुसन्धानमा महत्वपूर्ण योगदान पुर्‍याउनेछ ।

 

Group represented

English: The group represented in this collection consists of Deaf and hearing users of Ghandruk Sign Language from different generations living in the villages of Ghandruk, Hundu, Kimrong, and Chhomrong in Wards 10 and 11 of Annapurna Rural Municipality, Kaski District, western Nepal. Most community members belong to the Gurung ethnic group, although people from other ethnic communities also live in the area. Ghandruk Sign Language has developed naturally within this community over several generations and forms an important part of its linguistic and cultural heritage.
The collection documents the intergenerational use of Ghandruk Sign Language in everyday life, reflecting the community’s linguistic, cultural, and social diversity. It includes natural conversations, personal narratives, traditional knowledge, local history, and cultural practices, providing a rich record of the shared signing environment in which Deaf and hearing people communicate together.
The collection also represents the community-based research team. Bishwamitra Bhitrakoti is a Deaf native signer from Ghandruk and the principal researcher, with more than ten years of experience in Deaf rights, disability rights, sign language advocacy, and language documentation in Nepal. Gyan Bahadur Bhitrakoti and Jaman Singh Gurung are Deaf native signers from Ghandruk with extensive experience working within the local Deaf community. Samita Chhetri is a hearing resident of Ghandruk and a Nepali Sign Language interpreter who contributes to language documentation, community engagement, and collaborative research.

नेपाली: यस सङ्ग्रहमा प्रतिनिधित्व गरिएका समूह घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषा प्रयोग गर्ने विभिन्न पुस्ताका बहिरा तथा सुन्ने समुदायका सदस्यहरू हुन् । यसमा नेपालको कास्की जिल्लास्थित अन्नपूर्ण गाउँपालिका वडा नं. १० र ११ अन्तर्गतका घान्द्रुक, हुँदु, किम्रोङ र छोम्रोङ गाउँका बहिरा तथा सुन्ने साङ्केतिक भाषा प्रयोगकर्ताहरू समावेश छन् । समुदायका अधिकांश सदस्य गुरुङ जातिका भए पनि यस क्षेत्रमा अन्य जातीय समुदायका व्यक्तिहरू पनि बसोबास गर्छन् । घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषा यस समुदायभित्र धेरै पुस्तादेखि स्वभाविक रूपमा विकसित भएको स्थानीय गाउँ साङ्केतिक भाषा हो । जसले समुदायको भाषिक तथा सांस्कृतिक सम्पदाको महत्वपूर्ण अंशका रूपमा स्थान ओगटेको छ ।
यस सङ्ग्रहले बहिरा र सुन्ने समुदायबीच दैनिक जीवनमा प्रयोग हुने घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषाको पुस्तान्तरण, भाषिक, सांस्कृतिक तथा सामाजिक विविधतालाई अभिलेखीकरण गर्दछ । यसमा प्राकृतिक संवाद, व्यक्तिगत जीवनकथा, स्थानीय इतिहास, परम्परागत ज्ञान तथा सांस्कृतिक अभ्यासहरू समावेश छन् । जसले बहिरा र सुन्ने समुदायले साझा रूपमा प्रयोग गर्ने विशिष्ट साङ्केतिक भाषिक वातावरणलाई अभिलेख गर्दछ ।
यस सङ्ग्रहमा समुदायमा आधारित अनुसन्धान टोलीको पनि प्रतिनिधित्व रहेको छ । प्रमुख अनुसन्धानकर्ता विश्वमित्र भित्रकोटी घान्द्रुकका बहिरा मातृभाषी साङ्केतिक भाषा प्रयोगकर्ता हुन् । उहाँ विगत १० वर्षभन्दा बढी समयदेखि नेपालमा बहिरा अधिकार, अपाङ्गता अधिकार, साङ्केतिक भाषा संरक्षण, भाषा अभिलेखीकरण तथा अनुसन्धानमा सक्रिय रूपमा संलग्न हुनुहुन्छ । ज्ञान बहादुर भित्रकोटी र जमान सिंह गुरुङ घान्द्रुकका बहिरा मातृभाषी साङ्केतिक भाषा प्रयोगकर्ता हुन् र लामो समयदेखि स्थानीय बहिरा समुदायसँग सम्बन्धित सामाजिक तथा सामुदायिक कार्यमा योगदान पुर्‍याउँदै आएका छन् । समिता क्षेत्री घान्द्रुककी सुन्ने बासिन्दा तथा नेपाली साङ्केतिक भाषा दोभाषे हुन् । जसले भाषा अभिलेखीकरण, समुदायसँगको सहकार्य तथा समुदायमा आधारित अनुसन्धानमा महत्वपूर्ण योगदान पुर्‍याउँदै आउनुभएको छ ।

 

Language information

English: Ghandruk Sign Language is an indigenous village sign language used by Deaf and hearing members of the communities of Ghandruk, Hundu, Kimrong, and Chhomrong in Wards 10 and 11 of Annapurna Rural Municipality, Kaski District, western Nepal. It is a distinct language that developed naturally within the community over several generations and is not a variety of Nepali Sign Language.
Although Ethnologue (2023) reports only 20 users, recent community-based research indicates that Ghandruk Sign Language is used by approximately 400-500 Deaf and hearing people across the area, including around 40 regular signers in Ghandruk village. The language is embedded in a shared signing environment in which Deaf and hearing people communicate naturally using signs together with mouthings, facial expressions, and gestures.
The region is predominantly inhabited by the Gurung community, whose primary spoken language is Gurung, while most hearing residents are also fluent in Nepali. Ghandruk is internationally known as a major destination on the Annapurna trekking route, and contact with visitors and Deaf signers from other regions has introduced some influence from Nepali Sign Language and mixed international sign languages.
Despite its continued cultural importance, Ghandruk Sign Language is increasingly endangered. Younger Deaf people acquire Nepali Sign Language through residential Deaf schools, formal education, and social media, resulting in ongoing language shift. Community documentation conducted during 2024-2025 also found increasing lexical and communicative influence from Nepali Sign Language.
Research on Ghandruk Sign Language began in 2007 and contributed to its recognition as a distinct village sign language. Preliminary audiovisual documentation was carried out during 2024-2025 by a Nepali research team in collaboration with Dr. Theresia Hofer. Building on this work, the present project aims to produce the first comprehensive audiovisual documentation of the language, contributing to its long-term preservation, community-led language maintenance, and future linguistic research.

Ethnologue (२०२३) ले यस भाषाका २० जना प्रयोगकर्ता मात्र उल्लेख गरे पनि हालैको समुदायमा आधारित अनुसन्धानले यस भाषा करिब ४००-५०० जना बहिरा तथा सुन्ने व्यक्तिहरूले प्रयोग गर्ने देखाएको छ । जसमध्ये घान्द्रुक गाउँमा करिब ४० जना नियमित साङ्केतिक भाषा प्रयोगकर्ता छन् । यस समुदायमा बहिरा र सुन्ने व्यक्तिहरू संकेत, ओठको चाल, अनुहारका हाउभाउ तथा शारीरिक अभिव्यक्तिको संयुक्त प्रयोग गर्दै स्वाभाविक रूपमा सञ्चार गर्ने साझा साङ्केतिक भाषिक वातावरण विद्यमान छ ।
यस क्षेत्रका अधिकांश बासिन्दा गुरुङ समुदायका हुन् । गुरुङ यहाँको प्रमुख बोलिने भाषा हो भने अधिकांश सुन्ने बासिन्दाहरू नेपाली भाषामा पनि दक्ष छन् । घान्द्रुक अन्नपूर्ण पदयात्रा मार्गको प्रमुख पर्यटकीय गन्तव्य भएकाले विभिन्न क्षेत्रका बहिरा आगन्तुक तथा विदेशी पर्यटकहरूसँगको सम्पर्कका कारण नेपाली साङ्केतिक भाषा र केही बिदेशी मिश्रित साङ्केतिक भाषा प्रयोगहरूको प्रभाव पनि देखिन थालेको छ ।
समुदायमा महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका भए पनि घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषा हाल भाषा परिवर्तनको दबाबमा रहेको लोपोन्मुख भाषा हो । आवासीय बहिरा विद्यालय, औपचारिक शिक्षा तथा सामाजिक सञ्जालमार्फत नयाँ पुस्ताले नेपाली साङ्केतिक भाषा सिक्ने क्रम बढ्दै जाँदा स्थानीय भाषाको प्रयोग क्रमशः घट्दै गएको छ । सन् २०२४-२०२५ मा गरिएको समुदायमा आधारित अभिलेखीकरणले विशेषगरी युवा पुस्तामा नेपाली साङ्केतिक भाषाको शब्दावली र प्रयोगको प्रभाव बढ्दै गएको पुष्टि गरेको छ ।
घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषाको प्रारम्भिक भाषिक अनुसन्धान सन् २००७ मा सुरु भएको थियो । जसले यस भाषालाई स्वतन्त्र गाउँ साङ्केतिक भाषाका रूपमा चिनाउन महत्वपूर्ण योगदान पुर्‍यायो । त्यसपछि सन् २०२४-२०२५ मा नेपाली अनुसन्धान टोलीले डा. थेरेसिया होफरसँगको सहकार्यमा प्रारम्भिक दृश्य-श्रव्य अभिलेखीकरण सम्पन्न गरेको थियो । त्यसको निरन्तरता स्वरूप वर्तमान परियोजनाले यस भाषाको पहिलो विस्तृत दृश्य-श्रव्य अभिलेखीकरण तयार गरी यसको दीर्घकालीन संरक्षण, समुदायमा आधारित भाषा संरक्षण तथा भावी भाषावैज्ञानिक अनुसन्धानमा महत्वपूर्ण योगदान पुर्‍याउने लक्ष्य राखेको छ ।

Collection history

English: Documentation of Ghandruk Sign Language began in 2007, when preliminary linguistic research first identified it as a distinct indigenous village sign language of Nepal. This early work contributed to its recognition in the ISO 639-3 registration process and its inclusion in Ethnologue.
The first systematic community-based audiovisual documentation was undertaken between 2024 and 2025 by a Nepali research team in collaboration with Dr. Theresia Hofer. During this phase, video recordings of natural conversations, lexical elicitation, and sociolinguistic interviews were collected from 15 Deaf and hearing participants. The materials were processed through video organisation, metadata creation, transcription, translation, annotation, and linguistic analysis, forming the foundation of the present collection.
The current ELDP-funded project (SG1196), running from August 2026 to July 2027, expands this work through additional documentation with approximately 30 Deaf and hearing participants. The collection will include new audiovisual recordings, an expanded lexical database, transcriptions, translations, annotations, metadata, photographs, field notes, and sociolinguistic documentation. The collection is archived in the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) to ensure its long-term preservation and accessibility for community members, educators, and researchers. At present, these materials are not archived in any other public archive.

नेपाली: घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषाको प्रारम्भिक भाषिक अनुसन्धान सन् २००७ मा सुरु भएको थियो । जसले यस भाषालाई नेपालको स्वतन्त्र स्थानीय गाउँ साङ्केतिक भाषाका रूपमा पहिचान गर्न महत्वपूर्ण आधार प्रदान गर्‍यो । यस प्रारम्भिक अनुसन्धानले ISO 639-3 भाषा दर्ता प्रक्रियामा तथा Ethnologue मा यस भाषाको समावेशीकरणका लागि पनि महत्वपूर्ण योगदान पुर्‍यायो ।
घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषाको पहिलो व्यवस्थित समुदाय आधारित दृश्य-श्रव्य अभिलेखीकरण सन् २०२४-२०२५ मा नेपाली अनुसन्धान टोलीले डा. थेरेसिया होफरसँगको सहकार्यमा सम्पन्न गरेको थियो । यस चरणमा १५ जना बहिरा तथा सुन्ने सहभागीहरूबाट प्राकृतिक संवाद, शब्द सङ्कलन तथा समाजभाषिक अन्तर्वार्ताका भिडियो अभिलेखहरू सङ्कलन गरिएका थिए । त्यसपछि भिडियो व्यवस्थापन, मेटाडाटा तयार गर्ने, प्रतिलेखन, नेपाली तथा अंग्रेजी अनुवाद, भाषिक टिप्पणी तथा प्रारम्भिक भाषिक विश्लेषण गरी हालको सङ्ग्रहको आधार तयार गरिएको थियो ।
हालको ELDP अनुदान प्राप्त परियोजना (SG1196) अगस्ट २०२६ देखि जुलाई २०२७ सम्म सञ्चालन हुँदैछ । यस परियोजनाअन्तर्गत करिब ३० जना बहिरा तथा सुन्ने सहभागीहरूबाट थप दृश्य-श्रव्य अभिलेखहरू सङ्कलन गरिनेछन् । साथै विस्तारित शब्दसङ्ग्रह, प्रतिलेखन, नेपाली तथा अंग्रेजी अनुवाद, भाषिक टिप्पणी, मेटाडाटा, तस्बिर, फिल्ड नोट तथा समाजभाषिक अध्ययनसम्बन्धी सामग्रीहरू पनि सङ्ग्रहमा समावेश गरिनेछन् । सम्पूर्ण सामग्री दीर्घकालीन संरक्षण तथा भविष्यका अनुसन्धान, शिक्षण र समुदायको प्रयोगका लागि Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) मा अभिलेखीकरण गरिनेछ । हाल यी सामग्रीहरू अन्य कुनै सार्वजनिक अभिलेखागारमा उपलब्ध छैनन् ।

English: This collection has been developed through a community-based and Deaf-led documentation approach in close collaboration with local Deaf and hearing community members. Throughout the project, participants have been actively involved in planning, recording, reviewing, and documenting the language to ensure that the collection accurately reflects community knowledge, language use, and cultural values.
All recordings have been made with informed consent and follow ethical principles for language documentation and community research. The collection is intended not only as a permanent linguistic archive but also as a resource for the community to support language transmission, educational activities, awareness raising, and future documentation initiatives.
As one of the few comprehensive collections of an indigenous village sign language from the Himalayan region, this archive contributes to international research on sign languages, linguistic diversity, language endangerment, and inclusive documentation practices. It is expected to benefit community members, researchers, educators, students, and future generations interested in Ghandruk Sign Language and Deaf cultural heritage.

नेपाली: यो सङ्ग्रह स्थानीय बहिरा तथा सुन्ने समुदायको सक्रिय सहभागितामा आधारित समुदाय केन्द्रित तथा बहिरा नेतृत्वको भाषा अभिलेखीकरण परियोजनामार्फत तयार गरिएको हो । परियोजनाका सम्पूर्ण चरणहरूमा समुदायका सदस्यहरूले योजना निर्माण, अभिलेखीकरण, सामग्रीको समीक्षा तथा प्रमाणीकरणमा सक्रिय सहभागिता जनाएका छन् । जसले सङ्ग्रहलाई समुदायको भाषा, ज्ञान र सांस्कृतिक मूल्यहरूको विश्वसनीय प्रतिनिधित्व गर्ने स्रोत बनाएको छ ।
यस सङ्ग्रहका सबै सामग्रीहरू सहभागीहरूको सूचित सहमतिका आधारमा सङ्कलन गरिएका छन् र भाषा अभिलेखीकरण तथा समुदायमा आधारित अनुसन्धानका नैतिक सिद्धान्तहरू पालना गरिएको छ । यो सङ्ग्रह स्थायी अभिलेखका रूपमा मात्र नभई भाषा पुस्तान्तरण, शिक्षण-सिकाइ, जनचेतना अभिवृद्धि तथा भविष्यका भाषा संरक्षण र अभिलेखीकरणका प्रयासहरूलाई सहयोग पुर्‍याउने सामुदायिक स्रोतका रूपमा पनि प्रयोग हुने अपेक्षा गरिएको छ ।
हिमालय क्षेत्रको स्थानीय गाउँ साङ्केतिक भाषाको विस्तृत अभिलेखीकरण गर्ने थोरै सङ्ग्रहहरू मध्ये यो एक हो । यसले साङ्केतिक भाषा, भाषिक विविधता, लोपोन्मुख भाषाको संरक्षण तथा समावेशी भाषा अभिलेखीकरणसम्बन्धी अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय अनुसन्धानमा महत्वपूर्ण योगदान पुर्‍याउनेछ । साथै यो सङ्ग्रह समुदायका सदस्यहरू, अनुसन्धानकर्ता, शिक्षक, विद्यार्थी तथा भावी पुस्ताका लागि घान्द्रुक साङ्केतिक भाषा र बहिरा समुदायको सांस्कृतिक सम्पदासम्बन्धी महत्वपूर्ण स्रोत हुनेछ ।
