Group represented

English: The Sotkena people live in various villages along and near the Apawer River in the Sarmi Regency, Papua/Indonesia. The language is referred to by the names Sotkena, Sibya, Subu, and Airoran. All recordings for this archive were made in collaboration with the Subu village community. Subu maintains close ties with the neighboring Masep community. Masep and Subu consider themselves “sister communities”. For generations, they have maintained strong social ties through regular visits,
shared activities, and intermarriage, resulting in widespread bilingualism and shared cultural practices. Many recorded bilingual speakers also participated in the language documentation project of the neighboring Masep language and community (see the  Masep documentation archive).

Special characteristics

English: All data were collected between July 2023 and June 2025 and funded through an ELDP Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant (IPF0421), awarded to Christoph Bracks.

While the project initially focused on the Masep language, the scope expanded to include Subu as well. This was due to the high number of bilingual Subu-Masep speakers in the Masep community, as well as the close relationship between the two villages, which consider each other “sister villages.”

This collection is the result of close collaboration between members of the Subu and Masep communities and linguist Christoph Bracks. All materials were gathered by C. Bracks with the active involvement of the community. Initial data segmentation was carried out by C. Bracks, while transcription and translation into Indonesian were completed by community members Petrus and Octavianus Sauso. Translation into English and metadata compilation were also prepared by Christoph Bracks, who archived all materials. A grammatical analysis of the language is currently in progress.
