Summary of the collection
English: The current collection will be a valuable dataset consisting of a corpus-based record of the language. As a base for future work in both the community and academia, this collection includes a 15-hour audiovisual dataset that includes data in the form of folktales, legends, rituals, and beekeeping culture. Of all this, there is 8 hours of material fully annotated in ELAN; additionally, three hours will be segmented and glossed in the FieldWorks Language Explorer (FLEx).
In addition to audio/video materials, the collection contains a validated orthography guideline, which can be used as part of the community efforts in mother tongue education. In the collection, one will find a trilingual dictionary of Nayi, Amharic and English, consisting of 2,500 to 3,000 entries.

Amharic (አማርኛ): ይህ ስነዳ በደቡብ ምዕራብ ኢትዮጵያ የሚነገረውንና ለከፍተኛ መጥፋት አደጋ የተጋለጠውን ናይ የተባለውን የሰሜን ኦሞቲክ ቋንቋ በስልታዊ መንገድ የሰነደና የበለፀገ መረጃን በአንድ ላይ አቀናጅቶ የያዘ ነው። ለማህበረሰቡም ሆነ ለሰፊው የሳይንስ ዓለም መሠረታዊ መነሻ እንዲሆን ታስቦ የተዘጋጀው ይህ ስነዳ የተለያዩ ተፈጥሯዊ የመገናኛ ዘዴዎችን ማለትም ተረቶች፣ አፈታሪኮች፣ የባህል ሥነ-ሥርዓቶች እና የአካባቢውን የንብ ማነቢያ (የማር ምርት) ልምዶችን ያካተተ ባለ 15 ሰዓት ምስልና ድምጽ (audiovisual) ስብስብ አለው። ከእነዚህ ስብስቦች መካከል 8 ሰዓቱ በኢላን (ELAN) ሶፍትዌር ሙሉ በሙሉ የተቀየረና የተተረጎመ ሲሆን፣ 3 ሰዓቱ ደግሞ በፍሌክስ (FLEx) ሶፍትዌር አማካኝነት ዝርዝር የቃላት መዋቅር ትንተና እና የሰዋስው ማብራሪያ (interlinear glossing) የተደረገለት ነው።
ስነዳው በምስልና ድምጽ ከተቀረፀው መረጃ ባሻገር የአካባቢውን የአፍ መፍቻ ቋንቋ ትምህርት ለመደገፍ በማህበረሰቡ የተረጋገጠና ደረጃውን የጠበቀ የአጻጻፍ ስርዓት መመሪያን አካትቶ ይይዛል። በተጨማሪም ከ2,500 እስከ 3,000 የሚደርሱ ቃላትን የያዘ የናይ-አማርኛ-እንግሊዝኛ መዝገበ-ቃላት የሚዘጋጅ ሲሆን የቃላት ዳታቤዝን ያካተተ ስለሚሆን ለወደፊቱ ሰፊ መዝገበ-ቃላት ለማዘጋጀት እና ለማህበረሰቡ ቋንቋ ህልውና መጠበቅ ወሳኝ መሣሪያ ሆኖ ያገለግላል።
Group represented
English: Nayi refers to an indigenous ethnic group that has been living in Decha and Goba districts in Kafa Zone, and Sheko district in Bench Sheko Zone of Southwestern Ethiopia Peoples’ Region. The ethnic group shares common linguistic roots with some other groups such as the Dizoid speakers. The ethnic group has undergone several socio-economic changes as well as experienced migration and assimilation over the last one hundred years. Currently, the group numbers around seven thousand people. Due to constant linguistic dominance of neighboring groups, including Amharic and Kafi Noonoo speakers, the ethnic group preserves its culture through rituals.

Amharic (አማርኛ): ናይ (ናኦ) በአሁኑ ወቅት በደቡብ ምዕራብ ኢትዮጵያ ሕዝቦች ክልል በካፋ ዞን (በተለይም በዴቻና ጎባ ወረዳዎች) እና በቤንች ሸኮ ዞን (በሸኮ ወረዳ) የሚኖር ብሔረሰብ ነው። የናይ ማህበረሰብ በታሪክ ከሌሎች የዲዞይድ (Dizoid) የቋንቋ ቤተሰብ ተናጋሪዎች ጋር የጠበቀ ቁርኝት ያለው ሲሆን፣ ባለፈው አንድ ክፍለ ዘመን ውስጥ ከፍተኛ የማህበራዊ-ኢኮኖሚያዊ ለውጦች፣ ፍልሰትና የባህል ውህደት ገጥመውታል። በአሁኑ ጊዜ የብሔረሰቡ የህዝብ ቁጥር ወደ 7,000 ገደማ እንደሚገመት ይነገራል። ከአካባቢው ተፅዕኖ ፈጣሪ ቋንቋዎች (በተለይም ከአማርኛ እና ከካፊ ኖኖ) ከሚደርስበት ቀጣይነት ያለው የቋንቋ ግፊት/ጫና የተነሳ፣ በአሁኑ ጊዜ የናይ ቋንቋና ባህል ነክ ጉዳዮች ተግባራዊ ሲደረጉ የሚታዩት በዋናነት በዕድሜ በገፉ ሰዎችና በልዩ የባህል ሥነ-ሥርዓቶች ውስጥ ብቻ ሆኖ ይገኛል።
Language information
English: Nayi is an endangered language that is part of the Dizoid language family of the North Omotic language family, spoken in southwestern Ethiopia. Linguistically, it is known for its complex morphosyntax and grammar, along with a poorly understood tonal system. It is critically endangered since the youth population has shifted towards using Amharic and Kafi Noonoo, the two major languages of the area, for communication purposes on a day-to-day basis. In consequence of this shift, the Nayi language is now limited only to the elderly members of the community as well as in rituals.

Amharic (አማርኛ): ናይ በደቡብ ምዕራብ ኢትዮጵያ የሚነገርና በሰሜን ኦሞቲክ የቋንቋዎች ቤተሰብ ውስጥ በዲዞይድ (Dizoid) ምድብ ስር የሚመደብ ለአደጋ የተጋለጠ ቋንቋ ነው። ቋንቋው ከስነልሳናዊ ባህሪው አንፃር ሲታይ ውስብስብ የሆነ የቃላትና የአረፍተ-ነገር መዋቅር (morphosyntax)፣ ልዩ የሆነ የሰዋስው ባህሪ እና በበቂ ሁኔታ ያልተጠና የድምፅ ቃና (tonal) ስርዓት አለው። አዲሱ ትውልድ ለዕለት ተዕለት ተግባቦት በስፋት ወደ አማርኛ (የሀገሪቱ የስራ ቋንቋ) እና ወደ ካፊ ኖኖ (በአካባቢው ተፅዕኖ ፈጣሪ ቋንቋ) በመቀየሩ ምክንያት ቋንቋው ለከፍተኛ የመጥፋት አደጋ ተጋልጧል። በዚህም ምክንያት በአሁኑ ጊዜ የናይ ቋንቋ ተናጋሪነት በዕድሜ በገፉ ጥቂት አባቶች እና በልዩ የባህል ስነ-ስርዓቶች ላይ ብቻ የተገደበ በመሆኑ፣ ቋንቋውን በዘላቂነት ለማቆየት ስልታዊ የቋንቋ ሰነድ ዝግጅት እና የአጻጻፍ ስርዓት ማዳበር አጣዳፊ ተግባር ሆኗል።
Other Information
English: Apart from all the documentation outputs, this effort focuses significantly on empowerment through participation and ethical collaboration. The fieldwork is going to actively engage native community members as consultants, collaborators and students so that documentation would become a tool of knowledge transfer and sharing. Moreover, the orthography manual and the Nayi-Amharic-English dictionary are developed with a view to future mother tongue-based education programs and incorporation of the language into local primary schools. All the collected data is stored according to the set community-consent rules in order not to undermine the intellectual property rights of the Nayi speakers.

Amharic (አማርኛ): ይህ ፕሮጀክት ከዋናው የቋንቋ ሰነድ ዝግጅት ተግባር በተጨማሪ ለማህበረሰቡ አቅም ግንባታ እና ለጋራ የምርምር ስነ-ምግባር ከፍተኛ ትኩረት ይሰጣል። የመስክ ስራዎች የአካባቢውን ተወላጅ ተናጋሪዎች እንደ ዋና አማካሪዎች፣ ተባባሪ ተመራማሪዎችና ሰልጣኞች በቀጥታ የሚያሳታፍ ሲሆን ይህም የስነ-ሰነድ ሂደቱን የእውቀትና የክህሎት ሽግግር መድረክ እንዲሆን ያደርጋል። ከዚህም በላይ በማህበረሰቡ ተሳታፊነት የሚዘጋጀው የአጻጻፍ ስርዓት መመሪያና የናይ-አማርኛ-እንግሊዝኛ መዝገበ-ቃላት የወደፊቱን የአፍ መፍቻ ቋንቋ ትምህርት ለመደገፍና ቋንቋውን በአካባቢው የመጀመሪያ ደረጃ ትምህርት ውስጥ ለማካተት ሆን ተብሎ የተነደፉ ናቸው። በመሰነድ ሂደት ውስጥ የሚካተቱ ማናቸውም ቁሳቁሶች ባህላዊ እሴቶችን ለመጠበቅና ለናይ ህዝብ አእምሯዊ ንብረት እውቅና ለመስጠት ሲባል በማህበረሰቡ ስምምነት በተደነገገው የስምምነት መመሪያ (consent protocols) መሰረት በጥብቅ የሚመሩ ይሆናል።
