Summary of the collection
English: Nestled in the forest hills of the Western Ghats, the Vishavan (Malankudi/Malayan) community is a small tribal group whose unique language is now critically endangered. This collection represents the first comprehensive documentation of their linguistic and cultural heritage. It includes a descriptive grammar, a multilingual dictionary, and an extensive digital archive of audio-visual recordings capturing everyday life and oral traditions.

English: The Vishavan (also known as Malankudi or Malayan) are a small tribal community living in the forest hills of the Western Ghats in Kerala, India. Historically, they were forest dwellers and nomadic agriculturists who faced significant displacement following the construction of the Idamalayar Dam. Today, approximately 740 people live in four main settlements across the Thrissur and Ernakulam districts.

Malayalam (മലയാളം): കേരളത്തിലെ തൃശൂർ, എറണാകുളം ജില്ലകളിലെ പശ്ചിമഘട്ട വനമേഖലയിൽ താമസിക്കുന്ന ഗോത്രവിഭാഗമാണ് വിഷവൻ (മലങ്കുടി/മലയൻ). ചരിത്രപരമായി ഇടമലയാർ ഡാം നിർമ്മാണത്തെത്തുടർന്ന് കുടിയൊഴിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഇവർ നിലവിൽ നാല് പ്രധാന വനമേഖലകളിലായി ഏകദേശം 740 പേർ താമസിക്കുന്നു.
Language information
English: Vishavan is a critically endangered South-Central Dravidian language. While it remains the first language for many adults, it is not consistently passed on to children, who increasingly adopt Malayalam. The language is unique for its systematic vowel and consonant shifts and its preservation of archaic Dravidian forms not found in mainstream regional languages.

Malayalam (മലയാളം): ദക്ഷിണ-മധ്യ ദ്രാവിഡ ഭാഷാ കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടതും വംശനാശഭീഷണി നേരിടുന്നതുമായ ഒന്നാണ് വിഷവൻ ഭാഷ. മുതിർന്നവർക്കിടയിൽ ഇത് സംസാരഭാഷയായി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും പുതിയ തലമുറ മലയാളത്തിലേക്ക് മാറിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്. മറ്റ് ദ്രാവിഡ ഭാഷകളിൽ കാണാത്ത സവിശേഷമായ സ്വരമാറ്റങ്ങളും പ്രാചീനദ്രാവിഡ രൂപങ്ങളും ഈ ഭാഷയുടെ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്
Collection contents
English: In its planned version, the corpus will contain 24 hours of high-quality video recordings documenting the Vishavan (Malankudi) language. This include 20 hours of naturalistic data capturing interactive language use and 4 hours of elicited linguistic data. Additionally, the deposit features 12 hours of audio recordings made using BOLD. Of the documented data, 8 hours will have time-aligned IPA transcriptions with corresponding translations into both Malayalam and English. Furthermore, 6 hours of the material will be fully glossed using FLEx, supported by a lexical database containing 1,000 entries and a comprehensive Vishavan-English-Malayalam lexicon.
The sessions which can be treated as an introduction to the corpus are:
Metadocumentation: A comprehensive guide in English and Malayalam outlining the project methodology and corpus content;
Bilingual Metadata: Structured information about the collection created using lameta to ensure discoverability;
Vishravan Lexicon: A multilingual dictionary exported from FLEx covering core vocabulary and cultural terms;
Community Consent: Documentation detailing the ethical permissions and informed consent obtained from the speakers.
The naturalistic language use documented in the deposit includes, among others:
Oral traditions: traditional narratives, folk tales, and oral histories;
Cultural performances: traditional songs and ritual practices;
Daily life: everyday conversations and natural interactive settings;
Socio-cultural events: community gatherings and ritual performances.
