Summary of the collection

English: This project aims to document Yagua, a Peba-Yaguan language of the Peruvian Amazon spoken by fewer than 700 people. Yagua is the only extant member of its family and is severely endangered: most communities have shifted to Spanish, and intergenerational transmission has ceased. The project focuses on the previously undescribed “lower river” dialect, spoken in 3 communities along the Atacuari river, Loreto. The archival collection will include myths, personal narratives, songs, conversations, and procedural discourse, preserving cultural knowledge associated with the language.

Español: Este proyecto tiene como objetivo documentar el yagua, una lengua peba-yagua de la Amazonía peruana hablada por menos de 700 personas. Yagua es la única lengua de su familia hablada actualmente y está gravemente en peligro: la mayoría de las comunidades adoptaron el español y la transmisión intergeneracional ha cesado. El proyecto se enfoca en el dialecto del río abajo previamente no descrito, hablado en 3 comunidades del río Atacuari, Loreto. La colección va a incluir mitos, narrativas personales, canciones, conversaciones y discurso procesal, preservando el conocimiento cultural asociado con el idioma.

 

Group represented

English: The group represented in this deposit are the Yagua, who call themselves Ñijamï (lit. ‘people’), and their language Ñijamï Niquejada (lit. ‘the language of the people’). This documentation project is carried out predominantly in El Sol, a community consisting of approximately 15 households, located along the Atacuari river.

Español: El grupo representado en esta colección son los Yagua, quienes se autodenominan Ñijamï (lit. ‘gente’), y que llaman a su idioma Ñijamï Niquejada (lit. ‘la lengua de la gente’). Este proyecto de documentación se ha llevado a cabo principalmente en la comunidad El Sol, ubicada a lo largo del río Atacuari. La comunidad consiste en aproximadamente 15 núcleos familiares.

 

Language information

English: Yagua belongs to the small Peba-Yaguan language family, which consists of three known languages: Yagua, Peba, and Yameo. However, Yagua is the only extant language of the family; the other two no longer have any speakers and have very limited prior documentation. According to the 2018 population census, there are about 712 speakers of the Yagua language. The great majority of Yagua speakers are now bilingual in Spanish, and children no longer learn Yagua as their first language.

Español: Yagua pertenece a la pequeña familia de las lenguas peba-yagua, que consta de tres lenguas conocidas: Yagua, Peba y Yameo. Sin embargo, el yagua es el único idioma existente de la familia; los otros dos ya no se hablan y documentación previa de esas dos lenguas es muy limitada. Según el censo de población de 2018, hay alrededor de 712 hablantes del idioma yagua. La gran mayoría de los hablantes yagua ahora son bilingües en español, y los niños ya no aprenden yagua como su primer idioma.

 

Collection history

English: Maria Cheremisinova has been documenting Yagua since 2024. A part of the recordings collected between 2024 and 2025 have been deposited with the Archive of the Indigenous Languages of Latin America (AILLA): https://www.ailla.utexas.org/collections/1963/.
