Summary of the collection

English: This collection will focus on Koygu language. It will be carried out between July 2026 to June 2027 in Kuchuru, Kangaten, and Arba Minch. The collection will include 15 audio-video recorded naturalistic data, 6 hours audio-video recording of elicited data, 3 hours of audio-video recorded sociolinguistic interview, 5 hours transcribed and translated data in ELAN, and 2 hours of interlinear annotated data in FLEx. The recordings will be made by recording oral narratives, cultural performances, and material culture. Besides, a bilingual mini-dictionary comprising 1500 lexemes, a syntactic description, a short ethnographic note, and a sociolinguistic description of the speakers are the expected outputs of the project.

አማርኛ፦ ይህ ስብስብ የሚያተኩረው በኮይጉ ቋንቋ ነው። የስነዳው ሥራ ከ ነሐሴ 2018 ዓ/ም እስከ ሰኔ 2019 ዓ/ም ባለው ጊዜ በኩቹሩ፣ ካንጋተን እና አርባ ምንጭ ውስጥ ይካሄዳል። ስብስቡ 15 ሰአታት በድምጽ እና ምስል የተቀዳ የለት ተለት የተግባቦቶች መረጃ፣ የ6 ሰአታት በድምጽ እና ምስል የተቀረፁ የሥነልሳን ጥያቄዎች ላይ ያተኮረ መረጃ፣ የ3 ሰአታት በድምጽ እና ምስል የተቀዳ ማህበራዊ ሥነልሳን ላይ ያተኮረ ቃለ-መጠይቅ፣ 5 ሰአታት በELAN የተፃፈ እና የተተረጎመ መረጃ እና የ2 ሰአታት በFLEx ላይ ስዋስዋዊ ትንተና የተሰራለት መረጃ ያካትታል። የድምፅ እና ምስል ቀረፃው የሚያተኩረው የቃል ትረካዎችን፣ የባህል ትርኢቶችን እና የባህል እሴት ያላቸው ቁሳቁሳዊ ነገሮች ላይ ይሆናል፡፡ በተጨማሪም፣ 1500 ቃላት ያለው መዝገበ ቃላት፣ የቃላት አገባብ ገለፃ፣ አጭር የኢትኖግራፊ ማስታወሻ እና የተናጋሪዎቹ ማህበራዊ ቋንቋ ሁኔታን የሚተነትን ሰነድ ከፕሮጀክቱ የሚጠበቁ ውጤቶች ናቸው።

 

Group represented

English: The community represented in this deposit are the Koygu (koy-gu ‘circle-fire’) meaning “people around fire”. The Koygu people, who reside in the banks of the Omo River of Southwestern part of Ethiopia (in South Ethiopia Regional State), are one of the 76 ethnic groups represented in the Ethiopian Nationalities Council and are recognized as an independent ethnic group. They share boundaries with the Kara, Nyangatom and Mursi peoples. While they can intermarry with most neighboring ethnic groups, they do not intermarry with the Kara and Hamar people. The Koygu people have three clans: Garshima, Worba, and Bada. These clans are believed to have traveled to the west Omo River banks at different, undefined times and from different directions. This documentation will primarily take place in Kuchuru village where the majority of the Koygu people live.

የተወከለው ማሕበረሰብ

አማርኛ፦ በዚህ የሥነ-ልሳን እና ባህል እሴት የመረጃ ክምችት የተወከለው ማሕበረሰብ ኮይጉ ሲሆን የስያሜው ትርጉም ‘በእሳት ዙርያ የሚቀመጡ ሰዎች’ እንደማለት ነው፡፡ የኮይጉ ማሕበረስብ በደቡብ ኢትዮጵያ ክልል በደቡብ ምዕራብ አቅጣጫ ብርኦሞ ወንዝ ዳርቻዎች አካባቢ የሚኖሩ ሲሆኑ በኢትዮጵያ የብሔረሰቦች ምክር ቤት ውክልና ካላቸው 76 ብሔረሰቦቸ መካከል አንዱ ሲሆን ራሱን የቻለ ብሔረሰብ ነው፡፡ ኮይጉዎች ከካራ፣ ኛንጋቶም እና ሙርሲ ህዝቦች ጋር ድንበር ይጋራሉ፡፡ ከአብዛኞቹ አጎራባች ሕዝቦች ጋር መጋባት ቢችሉም ከካራ እና ከሃማር ህዝቦችጋር አይጋቡም። የኮይጉ ህዝብ ጋርሺማ፣ ወርባ እና ባዳ የሚባሉ ሶስት ጎሳዎች አሉት። እነዚህ ጎሳዎች ወደ ምእራብ ኦሞ ወንዝ ዳርቻ በተለያዩ ጊዜያት እና በተለያዩ አቅጣጫዎች ተጉዘዋል ተብሎ ይታመናል። ይህ የስነዳ ሥራ በዋነኝነት የሚካሄደው አብዛኛው የኮይጉ ህዝብ በሚኖርበት በኩቹሩ መንደር ነው።

 

Language information

English: The Koygu people refer to their language as Tog ka Koygu, which translates literally to ‘mouth of Koygu’. In the literature, the language has been spelled as Kwegu, Koegu, Koyego, and Kwegi (Eberhard et al, 2022), and it belongs to “the southeast Surmic group within the Surmic languages in the Nilo-Saharan phylum” (Hieda, 1991). It is spoken in various villages including Kuchuru, Galgida, Chalaka, Dosu, and Qoro, but predominantly in Kuchuru where the majority of the Koygu people reside. While the number of Koygu language speakers was estimated to be 300 (Hieda, 1991) and 545 (Moges, 2015), the current estimate places the number of speakers at 1400-1500. The total number of the population including infants and those who do speak the language, however, is estimated to be 1700-1800The language lacks a developed orthography and is not used in the school domain. Its speakers are highly multilingual, and the language is under pressure from Kara, Nyanagatom and Mursi.

ስለ ቋንቋው የተወሰነ መረጃ

አማርኛ፦ የኮይጉ ሰዎች ቋንቋቸውን ቶግ ካ ኮይጉ ይሉታል፣ በቀጥታ ሲተረጎምም ‘የኮይጉ አፍ’ ማለት ይሆናል። ባሉት ድርሳናት ውስጥ ቋንቋው ክዌጉ፣ ኮኤጉ፣ ኮየጎ፣ እና ክዌጊ (Eberhard et al, 2022) ተብሎ ተፅፎ የሚገኝ ሲሆን፣ ምድቡም በ “ደቡብ ምስራቅ ሱርሚክ ቡድን በሱርሚክ ቋንቋዎች በኒሎ-ሳሃራን ፋይለም” (Hieda ፣ 1991) እንደሆነ ተጠቅሰዋል። በተለያዩ መንደሮች ማለትም በኩቹሩ፣ ጋልጊዳ፣ ቻላካ፣ ዶሱ እና ቆሮ ይነገራል፣ ነገር ግን በብዛት በኩቹሩ ማለትም አብዛኛው የኮይጉ ህዝብ በሚኖርበት መንደር ላይ ይነገራል። ቀደም ባሉ ጊዚያት የኮይጉ ቋንቋ ተናጋሪዎች ቁጥር 300 (Hieda ፣ 1991) እና 545 (Moges፣ 2015) ሆኖ ሲገመት፣ አሁን ያለው ግምት የተናጋሪዎችን ቁጥር ወደ 1400-1500 አድርጎታል ሲሆን የማሕበረሰቡ አባላት ማለትም ጨቅላ ህፃናትንና ቋንቋውን መናገር የማይችሉትን ጨምሮ 1700-1800 እንደሆነ ይገመታል። ይህም በ2024 እኢአ በተደረገው የቤት ለቤት የህዝብ ቆጠራ መሠረት ነው። ቋንቋው የዳበረ የፊደል አጻጻፍ የሌለው ሲሆን በትምህርት ቤት ውስጥም ጥቅም ላይ እየዋለ አይደለም። ተናጋሪዎቹ ሲበዛ ልሳነ ብዙ ናቸው፤ ኮይጉ ቋንቋም በካራ፣ ኛንጋቶም እና ሙርሲ ቋንቋዎች ጫና ያለበት ሲሆን ባህርያቱንም ወደ እንዚህ ቋንቋዎች በመለወጥ ሂደት ላይ ነው።
