Summary of the collection

English: The Chilisso Documentation Project was carried out in Kohistan, Pakistan, in active collaboration with the local community. It focused on recording and preserving both the Chilisso language and the cultural practices associated with it through a collaborative and participatory approach. Native speakers played a central role in the process, contributing to data collection, transcription, and interpretation.

The resulting archive consists of a wide range of audio and video recordings produced in natural settings. These include interviews, folk stories, historical narratives, and traditional recipes, all of which capture language use in everyday contexts. In addition to naturally occurring speech, the project also includes recordings of grammatical elicitation, providing more structured linguistic data.

Together, these materials offer a rich and authentic representation of the language as it is spoken within the community, along with insights into cultural knowledge and practices. The collection not only supports linguistic analysis but also contributes to the long-term preservation of the Chilisso language and the community’s cultural heritage.

Group represented

English: Chilisso is associated with the Chillis Khel community, who live along the mountainous eastern bank of the Indus River in Kohistan, Pakistan. Members of the Chillis Khel tribe are dispersed across several areas, including Dasu, Jalkot, Mahirin, and Gujjar Banda. Recent estimates from speakers suggest that only about 500–600 active speakers remain, mainly in Gujjar Banda and Dasu. Many families are semi-nomadic and frequently relocate to cope with harsh weather conditions.

Language information

English: Chilisso is a Dardic (Indo-Aryan) language spoken by the Chillis Khel community in Kohistan, Pakistan, particularly along the eastern bank of the Indus River in areas such as Dasu and Gujjar Banda. It is a highly endangered language, with only a few hundred active speakers remaining, and is primarily maintained within close-knit, often semi-nomadic communities. Due to urbanization and increasing mobility and social interaction, Chilisso exists in close contact with major regional languages. Among these, Shina serves as a key regional contact language and lingua franca across much of Kohistan, facilitating inter-community communication. As a result, Chilisso speakers are typically multilingual, and the influence of Indus Kohistani, along with Urdu as a national language, is evident in patterns of language use, borrowing, and gradual language shift.

It brings together folk stories, historical narratives, and the community’s traditional recipes, all of which are typically transmitted orally and are at risk of being lost. The inclusion of these genres makes the collection especially valuable, as they reflect not only linguistic structures but also the lived experiences, cultural memory, and everyday practices of the community. this collection fills a major gap in the documentation of Chilisso, as these genres have not been systematically recorded or studied before. The data therefore represents unique and original material that cannot be found elsewhere. By preserving this previously undocumented knowledge, the collection contributes not only to language documentation but also to safeguarding the intangible cultural heritage of the community.
