Summary of the collection

English: This project documents Angaité (Enlhet-Enenlhet family) as spoken in La Patria and other nearby indigenous communities. The specific variety covered here is known as Kovahlok, and its grammar and lexicon are underdescribed. This language is endangered, and according to the last censuses there may be less than 500 speakers. Most speakers have shifted to Paraguayan Guarani over the last decades. This project was made possible by various actors. On one hand, by the speakers themselves, especially Damasio Flores, Aníbal Padrón, and all the members of the Navarro family, who have hosted me and answered my insistent questions for many years. On the other hand, by ELDP and the NGO Tierraviva para los pueblos indígenas del Chaco. This collection is a work in progress and one of its aims is to create written materials for the community.

Español: Este proyecto documenta el angaité (familia enlhet-enenlhet) hablado en La Patria y otras comunidades indígenas cercanas. La variedad específica que se trata aquí se conoce como kovahlok, y su gramática y léxico están poco descritos. Esta lengua está en peligro de extinción y, según los últimos censos, podría haber menos de 500 hablantes. La mayoría de los hablantes han adoptado el guaraní paraguayo en las últimas décadas. Este proyecto fue posible gracias a varios actores. Por un lado, a los propios hablantes, especialmente a Damasio Flores, Aníbal Padrón y a todos los miembros de la familia Navarro, quienes me han acogido y respondido a mis insistentes preguntas durante muchos años. Por otro lado, a ELDP y la ONG Tierraviva para los pueblos indígenas del Chaco. Esta colección es un trabajo en progreso y uno de sus objetivos es crear materiales escritos para la comunidad.

 

Group represented

English: The group represented in this deposit are the Angaité, who call themselves ‘Kovahlok’ and their language ‘Kovahlok Appayvoma’. The Kovahlok are one of the subgroups of the Angaité people, which is one of the ethnic groups composing the Enlhet-Enenlhet linguistic family (also known as Mascoyan). Among the Angaité the most used language nowadays is Paraguayan Guarani rather than their ancestral language. For that reason, Guarani was used as the main working language of this project. Field work was carried out in different villages of La Patria and other nearby indigenous communities of the Paraguayan Chaco. I am immensely grateful to all the people in La Patria and Sarĩa who hosted me all these years and who agreed to be elicited and interviewed.

Español: El grupo representado en esta colección son los angaité, que se autodenominan “kovahlok” y a su lengua “kovahlok appayvoma”. Los kovahlok son una de las parcialidades del pueblo angaité, uno de los grupos étnicos que componen la familia lingüística enlhet-enenlhet (también conocida como mascoy). Entre los angaité, el idioma más utilizado actualmente es el guaraní paraguayo, en lugar de su lengua ancestral. Por ello, el guaraní se utilizó como principal lengua de trabajo en este proyecto. El trabajo de campo se realizó en diferentes aldeas de La Patria y otras comunidades indígenas cercanos del Chaco paraguayo. Agradezco profundamente a todas las personas de La Patria y Sarĩa que me acogieron durante todos estos años y que aceptaron ser entrevistadas.

 

Language information

English: The word Angaité has been used to designate one the Enlhet-Enenlhet peoples and their language at least since the mid-19th century. Nowadays it is recognized that the Angaité include different subgroups, and thus there is probably more than one linguistic variety. As for the Kovahlok, they usually refer to their language as Angaité and sometimes as Kovahlok Appayvoma (‘the Kovahlok language’). Although the Angaité broadly use Guarani as their everyday language and the very word Angaité comes from Guarani, these are unrelated. Finally, in some sources Angaité is presented as a dialect of the Sanapaná language, contrary to the speakers’ perception. Despite their closeness, there are evident grammatical and lexical differences between Sanapaná and Angaité.

Español: La palabra angaité se ha utilizado para designar a uno de los pueblos enlhet-enenlhet y a su lengua al menos desde mediados del siglo XIX. Hoy en día se reconoce que los angaité engloban diferentes parcialidades y, por lo tanto, probablemente exista más de una variedad lingüística. En cuanto a los kovahlok, estos suelen referirse a su lengua como angaité y, a veces, como ‘kovahlok appayvoma’ (la lengua kovahlok). Aunque los angaité utilizan ampliamente el guaraní como su lengua cotidiana y la propia palabra angaité proviene del guaraní, estos no están relacionados. Finalmente, en algunas fuentes, angaité se presenta como un dialecto de la lengua sanapaná, contrariamente a la percepción de los hablantes. A pesar de su proximidad, existen diferencias gramaticales y léxicas evidentes entre sanapaná y angaité.

 

Special characteristics

English: This deposit is a result of a collaborative effort of a linguist, Nicolás Brid, and native speakers of Angaité Kovahlok. Apart from documenting an underdescribed language, one thing that makes this collection special is the use of another indigenous language, namely Paraguayan Guarani. This is not only used by the linguist in order to elicit words and phrases, but also by speakers as part of their interviews and stories. Since creole Paraguayan Guarani, known as Jopara, uses many Spanish words, in some Angaité stories of this collection one can observe the interaction of the three languages used for different purposes.

Español: Este depósito es el resultado de la colaboración entre el lingüista Nicolás Brid y hablantes nativos de angaité kovahlok. Además de documentar una lengua poco descrita, un aspecto especial de esta colección es el uso de otra lengua indígena, el guaraní paraguayo. Esta lengua no solo es utilizada por el lingüista para elicitar palabras y frases, sino también por los hablantes en sus entrevistas e historias. Dado que el guaraní paraguayo criollo, conocido como jopara, utiliza muchas palabras del español, en algunos relatos angaité de esta colección se puede observar la interacción de las tres lenguas, utilizadas con diferentes propósitos.

 

Collection contents

English: In its current version, the corpus consists of many hours of recorded language use. This includes video and audio files. Audio files contain elicitation sessions, where I use Paraguayan Guarani in order to elicit words and phrases in Angaité. Elicitation sessions are long and generally not subtitles, but they are accompanied by a .srt file with the list of words elicited. Video files and some audio files contain interviews or stories. These are all subtitled in Angaité and Spanish. There are also some files in Guarani, which are the translation of another file in Angaité, usually the previous one. These are subtitled in Guarani and Spanish. Subtitles are downloadable as .srt files.

Español: En su versión actual, el corpus consta de muchas horas de grabación de la lengua en uso. Esto incluye archivos de video y audio. Los archivos de audio contienen sesiones de elicitación, donde utilizo guaraní paraguayo para obtener palabras y frases en angaité. Las sesiones de elicitación son largas y generalmente no tienen subtítulos, pero van acompañadas de un archivo .srt con la lista de palabras obtenidas.
Los archivos de video y algunos archivos de audio contienen entrevistas o relatos. Todos están subtitulados en angaité y español. También hay algunos archivos en guaraní, que son la traducción de otro archivo en angaité, generalmente el anterior. Estos están subtitulados en guaraní y español. Los subtítulos se pueden descargar como archivos .srt.
