Summary of the collection
English: This project documents Juma, Parintintin, and Jupaú, three ethnic varieties among eight in the pan-Kawahíva, a Tupí-Guaraní language complex spoken in Brazil. Only three individuals speak Juma, about 60 speak Jupaú, and around 20 speak Parintintin. In all cases, the speakers of these varieties are middle-aged adults and elders. The outcomes of this project include recordings of wordlists, grammatical phenomena, and verbal arts; transcriptions and annotations; language materials for the community; and training of a Parintintin person in documentation.

Group represented
English: This collection represents three ethnolinguistically related Indigenous communities from the Brazilian Amazon: Juma, Jupaú (commonly known by the exonym Uru Eu Wau Wau), and Parintintin. The communities refer to the ethnolinguistic complex as Kawahiva ‘Indigenous person’. Currently, the Juma population consists of 24 people and reside in a single village in the Brazilian state of Amazonas; the Jupaú are around 107 people, distributed in six villages in the state of Rondônia; and the Parintintin are approximately 460 individuals who live in three villages, also in the state of Amazonas. Other Kawahiva communities (not represented in the collection) are the Amondawa, the Karipuna, the Jiahui, the Piripkura, and the Tenharin.

Language information
English: The three communities represented in this collection speak highly mutually intelligible varieties of Kawahiva, a language of the Tupí-Guaraní branch of the Tupí language family. The communities refer to their language variety using the name of their speech communities (e.g., the Juma speak Juma).
The Kawahiva varieties spoken by the Juma, Jupaú, and Parintintin are highly endangered. In particular, Juma is spoken by three sisters; Parintintin has 19 speakers (Fieldwork, November 2024), and Jupaú has approximately 60 speakers. In all cases, the language has not been transmitted to children. It is spoken by middle-aged adults and elders despite the highly positive attitudes and the fact that some of the communities have been in contact with outsiders only since the 1980s, like the Jupaú.

English: In some aspects, this collection contributes as a pioneering work of language documentation of the Kawahíva language and the Tupí-Guaraní language family. For instance, this is the first audiovisual and accessible documentation of Parintintin. English: This collection contains a corpus of high-quality audiovisual, carefully transcribed recordings of Parintintin verbal art and conversational texts. It also includes recordings of lexical and grammatical elicitation sessions, accompanied by fieldnotes. In addition, it also exhibits audiovisual recordings, accompanied by transcriptions, of Juma and Jupaú verbal art.

English: Transcriptions in the Indigenous language use the practical writing system adopted by the communities represented in the collection. Most letters represent the same sounds they represent in Portuguese and English, with a few orthographic conventions worth noting, as follows: ⟨y⟩ = /ɨ/, the apostrophe ⟨’⟩ = /ʔ/, and ⟨tx⟩ = /tʃ/. The most significant orthographic idiosyncrasy of this system is the use of the sequence <gã> to represent the sound /ŋ/. Additionally, phonetic nasalization is indicated via a tilde over the nasalized vowel.
