Summary of the collection

English: The Hexkaryana Collection houses the documentary records of the Hexkaryana language, history and culture of the Xowyana and Okoymoyana peoples of the Jatapu River. The first records were made in February 2024 and recover the memories of these peoples of leaving and returning to their original territories, where today the villages of Kumunyarà and Kahxe to are located in the Indigenous Land of Ararà, State of Amazonas, Brazil. The collaboration between the Aymara Association (representing the Xowyana, Okoymoyana and Kararayana peoples of the Jatapu River) and the researchers made it possible to record interviews with all the families in the villages and to document a variety of personal stories, traditional knowledge and myths in the Hexkaryana language, work that will continue over the next few years. The videos record the making of feather ornaments, pottery, the building of roofs with ubim straw (nayarà) and the richness of the language as recorded by narrators of different ages. Português: A Coleção Hexkaryana abriga os registros de documentação da língua hexkaryana, da história e da cultura dos povos Xowyana e Okoymoyana do rio Jatapu. Os primeiros registros realizados foram foram gravados em fevereiro de 2024 e recuperam as memórias destes povos sobre a saída e o retorno aos seus territórios originais, onde hoje estão as aldeias Kumunyarà e Kahxe to na Terra Indígena Ararà, estado do Amazonas, Brasil. A colaboração entre Associação Aymara (representante dos povos Xowyana, Okoymoyana e Kararayana do rio Jatapu) e os pesquisadores, permitiu gravar entrevistas com todas as famílias das aldeias e documentar uma variedade de histórias pessoais, conhecimentos tradicionais e mitos em língua hexkaryana, trabalho que continuará nos próximos anos. Os vídeos são registro de modos de fazer adornos plumários, cerâmica, construção de telhados com palha de ubim (nayarà) e da riqueza linguística a partir do registro de narradores de várias idades. English: The Okoymoyana and Xowyana are indigenous peoples of the Hexkaryana language, part of the Karib language family, which is predominant in the northern Amazon. Forced to leave their territories in the 1970s and 1980s during the Brazilian military dictatorship, the indigenous peoples of the Jatapu River left to live in foreign lands on the Essequibo River (Guyana) and the Nhamundá and Mapuera Rivers (Pará, Brazil). For decades, their names were forgotten and they became known by the ethnonym Hexkaryana, the name of the indigenous people who speak the language of the same name and who originally inhabited the Nhamundá River. After returning to their territories on the Jatapu River, they demanded recognition of the distinction between the different peoples who speak the language, which was baptised Hexkaryana by the linguist and missionary Desmond Derbyshire in the 1960s. Today they use the names of the indigenous peoples to which they and their ancestors belong: Okoymoyana and Xowyana.

Português: Os Okoymoyana e Xowyana são povos indígenas de língua hexkaryana, pertencente ao tronco linguístico Karib, predominante no norte amazônico. Devido ao deslocamento forçado durante a ditadura militar brasileira, os povos indígenas do rio Jatapu deixaram seu territórios na década de 1970 e 1980 para viverem em terras estrangeiras no rio Essequibo (Guiana) e nos rios Nhamundá e Mapuera (Pará, Brazil). Por décadas seus nomes caíram no esquecimento e passaram a ser conhecidos sob o etnônimo Hexkaryana, nome do povo indígena falante da língua homônima que habita originariamente o rio Nhamundá. Após retornarem aos seus territórios no rio Jatapu, reivindicaram o reconhecimento da distinção entre os diversos povos falantes da língua batizada na década de 1960 de Hexkaryana pelo linguista e missionário Desmond Derbyshire. Hoje utilizam os nomes dos povos indígenas aos quais pertencem e ao qual pertencem seus antepassados: Okoymoyana e Xowyana.

 

Language information

English: The Hexkaryana language is spoken by indigenous peoples who inhabit the interfluve of the Jatapu, Nhamundá and Mapuera rivers. These indigenous peoples have been in constant contact with non-indigenous people since at least 1942, but the first description of the language was published in 1965 by Desmond Derbyshire in an article entitled ‘The Postpositional: Particle Word Class in Hixkaryana’. No other author had previously published a study of Hexkaryana speakers under this name. To this day, the writing conventions of the language are largely based on Derbyshire’s transcription of narratives (‘Hixkaryâna Texts’, 1965) and the same author’s translation of the Bible into Hixkaryana. Since then, Derbyshire has been the only one to study it systematically and carry out fieldwork to collect linguistic data. The documentation and research that has led to this collection is the first initiative to study Hexkaryana for decades, to collect and publish data on the language.
Hexkaryana belongs to the Karib language family and is spoken as a mother tongue by all native speakers. There are currently an estimated 1,250 speakers, all in indigenous villages or towns in the states of Amazonas or Pará in Brazil. We have chosen to spell Hexkaryana as the natives write it today, with an e, but academic publications usually choose to write Hexkaryana with an i.

Português: A língua hexkaryana é falada por povos indígenas que habitam o interflúvio dos rios Jatapu, Nhamundá e Mapuera. Estes povos indígenas estão em contato perene com os não indígenas ao menos desde 1942, mas a primeira descrição como língua foi publicada em 1965 por Desmond Derbyshire num artigo intitulado “The Postpositional: Particle Word Class in Hixkaryana’. Nenhum outro autor havia publicado anteriormente um estudo sobre os falantes de Hexkaryana sob este nome. Até hoje as convenções de escrita da língua se baseiam largamente na transcrição de narrativas por Derbyshire (“Textos Hixkaryâna”, 1965) e na tradução da Bíblia para o hexkaryana, realizada pelo mesmo autor. Desde então, Derbyshire foi o único a estudá-lo sistematicamente e realizar trabalho de campo para coletar dados linguísticos. O trabalho de documentação e a pesquisa que dão origem a este acervo são a primeira iniciativa de estudo do hexkaryana em décadas a coletar e publicar dados sobre a língua.
A língua hexkaryana pertence à família das línguas Karib e é falada como língua materna por todos os nativos. Estima-se atualmente uma comunidade de 1250 falantes, todos em aldeias indígenas ou cidades dos estados do Amazonas ou do Pará, no Brasil. Optamos por grafar hexkaryana como os nativos a escrevem hoje em dia, com e, mas as publicações acadêmicas costumam optar pela escrita de hixkaryana com i.

 

Special characteristics

English: The Hexkaryana Collection was made possible by the research commitment of its two depositors, anthropologists Carmen Brasolin and André Sanches de Abreu, and the leaders of the villages of Kumunyarà (Nova Bacaba), Kahxe to (Santa Maria) and the Aymara Association representing the Okoyomyana, Xowyana and Kararayana peoples. At the heart of the project is the question of the return of the descendants of Paulo Txentxe and Joana Kamyara; Sahmentu and Neka Makyana; José Yeriyeri and Lucila Ahyakowo to their ancestral lands. It was the wish of the eldest Xowyana and Okoymoyana to die in the land where they were born. Today, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are fighting for the Brazilian government to recognise the Indians’ land. The success of the research and documentation project is due to the generosity of the families who welcomed, nurtured and shared their life stories and the stories of their elders with the researchers.

Português: A Coleção Hexkaryana tornou-se possível pelo compromisso de pesquisa entre seus dois antropólogos depositantes, Carmen Brasolin e André Sanches de Abreu, e as lideranças das aldeias Kumunyarà (Nova Bacaba), Kahxe to (Santa Maria) e da Associação Aymara, representante dos povos Okoyomyana, Xowyana e Kararayana. O projeto é atravessado pela questão do retorno das famílias de descendentes de Paulo Txentxe e Joana Kamyara; Sahmentu e Neka Makyana; José Yeriyeri e Lucila Ahyakowo às suas terras originárias. Collection contents

English: The current version of the Hexkaryana Collection contains eight hours and fifty-eight minutes of audiovisual material. Due to the wide variety of subjects and speakers featured in the recordings, we have provided a brief description of the content of each video to help you navigate the Hexkaryana Collection. There are four main video themes: life stories, customs of the ancients, mythical tales, and ways of doing things. Some videos fall into more than one category, so we recommend that you read the descriptions. The interviewees tell their stories either in Portuguese or in Hexkaryana with consecutive translation into Portuguese. The Hexkaryana collection is a work in progress and more videos will be added in the near future.

Mythical tales about the Demiurges and the stories of the ancient shamans;

Conteúdo da Coleção

Português: A atual versão da Coleção Hexkaryana possui oito horas e cinquenta e oito minutos de material audiovisual. Devido a grande variedade de assuntos e falantes retratados nas gravações, realizamos uma breve descrição de conteúdo em cada vídeo para instruir a navegação na Coleção Hexkaryana. Há quatro grandes temas de vídeos: histórias de vida, os costumes dos antigos, narrativas míticas e modos de fazer. Alguns vídeos recaem em mais de uma categoria, por isto recomenda-se ler as descrições. Os entrevistados narram suas histórias ou em português ou em hexkaryana com tradução consecutiva em português. A Coleção Hexkaryana é um trabalho em andamento, e contará com mais vídeos no futuro próximo.

Collection history

English: The collaboration with the indigenous peoples interviewed in this collection grew out of the anthropological research carried out by Carmen Añon Brasolin for her Master’s thesis on the indigenous peoples of the Jatapu River in 2022. Initially, the project to document the Hexkaryana language and culture of the Okoymoyana and Xowyana peoples was carried out independently by the depositors, Carmen Brasolin and André Sanches de Abreu in the beginning of 2024. Subsequently, the recorded material was kindly hosted by the ELDP on the ELAR platform for safeguarding and publicising that same year.

História da coleção

Português: A cooperação com os povos indígenas entrevistados nesta coleção nasceu da pesquisa antropológica sobre os povos indígenas do rio Jatapu realizada por Carmen Añon Brasolin para sua tese de mestrado em 2022. Inicialmente o projeto de documentação da língua e cultura hexkaryana dos povos Okoymoyana e Xowyana se deu de maneira independente por seus depositantes, Carmen Brasolin e André Sanches de Abreu no início de 2024. Posteriormente, o material gravado foi gentilmente acolhido pelo ELDP na plataforma ELAR, para sua salvaguarda e publicização no mesmo ano.
