English: The recordings comprise Hedda Scherres’s research recordings, which she realised during her field resesearch for her PhD Tesis in the Mexican state of Guerrero (1995/96). The work is a study of sacrificial rituals and the lifeworld of the nahuatl speaking people in Guerrero. The recordings include ritual language in a religious context at different sacred places.

Español: Se trata de las grabaciones de la investigación de Hedda Scherres, que realizó durante su investigación de campo para su tesis doctoral en el estado mexicano de Guerrero (1995/96). El trabajo es un estudio de los rituales de sacrificio y el mundo de la vida de los pueblos de habla náhuatl de Guerrero. Las grabaciones incluyen el lenguaje ritual en un contexto religioso en diferentes lugares sagrados.
Group represented
English: Hedda Scherres’ research took place in the state of Guerrero. Here, too, there are different variants of the language. The variants spoken in the Municipio de Chilapa are linguistically categorised as Central Guerrero dialects.
All villagers still speak and understand Nahuatl. It is still the everyday language. Monolingue people who only speak Nahuatl are only found in isolated cases. If you go to the neighbouring villages, the language is already changing. There are major language differences in Zitlala and Acatlan. Both language variants have already been documented.

Español: El estudio de Hedda Scherres tuvo lugar en el estado de Guerrero. Aquí también hay diferentes variantes de la lengua. Las variantes habladas en el municipio de Chilapa se clasifican lingüísticamente como dialectos del centro de Guerrero.
Todos los habitantes del pueblo siguen hablando y entendiendo el náhuatl. Sigue siendo la lengua cotidiana. Los monolingües que sólo hablan náhuatl sólo se encuentran en casos aislados. Si vas a los pueblos vecinos, la lengua ya está cambiando. Hay grandes diferencias lingüísticas en Zitlala y Acatlán. Ambas variantes lingüísticas ya han sido documentadas.
Language information
English: Nahuatl is the indigenous language with the most speakers in Mexico today. The speakers are spread across 16 Mexican states. The highest concentration is found in the states of Puebla, Veracruz and Guerrero. Different variants of the language are spoken in the different regions and federal cities. However, the speakers understand each other.

Español: El náhuatl es la lengua indígena con más hablantes en México en la actualidad. Los hablantes se reparten por 16 estados mexicanos. La mayor concentración se encuentra en los estados de Puebla, Veracruz y Guerrero. En las distintas regiones y ciudades federales se hablan diferentes variantes de la lengua. Sin embargo, los hablantes se entienden entre sí.
