Group represented

English: The Rarámuri or Tarahumara are a group of indigenous people of the Americas living in the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Originally inhabitants of much of Chihuahua, the Rarámuri retreated to the high sierras and canyons such as the Copper Canyon in the Sierra Madre Occidental on the arrival of Spanish colonizers in the 16th century. The area of the Sierra Madre Occidental which they now inhabit is often called the Sierra Tarahumara because of their presence. Estimates put the Rarámuri population in 2006 at between 50,000 and 70,000 people.

Habitantes originarios de gran parte de Chihuahua, los rarámuri se retiraron a las altas sierras y a cañones como las Barrancas del Cobre, en la Sierra Madre Occidental, a la llegada de los colonizadores españoles en el siglo XVI. Debido a su presencia, la zona de la Sierra Madre Occidental que ahora habitan suele denominarse Sierra Tarahumara. Se calcula que en 2006 la población rarámuri era de entre 50.000 y 70.000 personas.

Language information

English: Rarámuri is an indigenous language in northern Mexico, spoken by the Tarahumara ethnic group. It belongs to the Uto-Aztecan languages. According to the 2010 census, Rarámuri is spoken by around 88,000 people in the south-west of the state of Chihuahua. SIL International divides Rarámuri into four individual languages (of which the Central Tarahumara is the most widely spoken, with 55,000 speakers in 2000). According to ISO 639, the language consists of five varieties: The ISO 639-3 code [tar] stands for Central Tarahumara, [thh] for Northern Tarahumara, [tcu] for Southeastern Tarahumara, [twr] for Southwestern Tarahumara, [tac] for Western Tarahumara.

Según el censo de 2010, rarámuri es hablado por unas 88.000 personas en el suroeste del estado de Chihuahua. SIL International divide rarámuri en cuatro lenguas individuales (de las cuales la tarahumara central es la más hablada, con 55.000 hablantes en 2000). Según la norma ISO 639, la lengua consta de cinco variedades: El código ISO 639-3 [tar] corresponde al tarahumara central, [thh] al tarahumara del norte, [tcu] al tarahumara del sureste, [twr] al tarahumara del suroeste y [tac] al tarahumara del oeste.
