Summary of the collection / Résumé de la collection
English: Paloor is a language of Senegal (West Africa) belonging to the Cangin subgroup of the Atlantic branch of the Niger-Congo languages. With around 5,000 speakers, the language has two dialects that differ phonologically and lexically. The corpus proposed here is made up of several hours of audio recordings for the purposes of developing a grammar. It includes elicitation, cultural narratives and interactions between speakers. Some of the recordings have been transcribed and translated into Wolof, the language of contact with the Paloor, and into French.
Français: Le paloor est une langue du Sénégal (Afrique de l’Ouest) appartenant au sous-groupe Cangin de la branche Atlantique des langues Niger-Congo. La langue qui compte environ 5000 locuteurs compte deux dialectes qui diffèrent sur les plan phonologique et lexical. Le corpus proposé ici est constitué de plusieurs heures d’enregistrements audio pour les besoins de l’élaboration d’une grammaire. Il comprend de l’élicitation, des récits culturels et des interactions entre locuteurs. Une partie des enregistrements est transcrite, traduite en wolof, langue de contact avec les Paloor et en français.

English:The Paloor are one of the five peoples belonging to the Northwest Seereer, who are located in the rural community of Keur Moussa, in the Thiès region of Senegal. In addition to the Paloor, the Northwest Seereer include the Ndut, Noon, Saafen and Lehar. In their language, the Paloor are called Siili, which means “Seereer”. To distinguish themselves from other Seereer communities, they use Paloor. The Siili Paloor are therefore the “Seereer Paloor”. The Paloor divide their community into two groups: the “Paloor Kajoor”, for those in the north, and the “Paloor Bawol”, for those in the south, named after the two corresponding Wolof kingdoms (Kajoor and Bawol) to which they were geographically closest. The corpus of the collection was initially collected in several villages that had preserved the language, before concentrating on the villages of Touly and Khoddoba, representative of each of the Paloor dialects.
Français: Les Paloor constituent l’un des cinq peuples composant les Seereer du Nord-Ouest installés dans la communauté rurale de Keur Moussa, région de Thiès au Sénégal. Outre les Paloor, on compte parmi les Seereer du Nord-Ouest, les Ndut, les Noon, les Saafen et les Lehar. Dans leur langue, les Paloor se nomment Siili qui signifie « Seereer ». Pour se distinguer des autres communautés Seereer ils utilisent Paloor. Les Siili Paloor sont donc les « Seereer Paloor ». Les Paloor divisent leur communauté en deux groupes : les « Paloor Kajoor », pour ceux du nord et les « Paloor Bawol », pour ceux du sud, nommés selon les deux royaumes Wolof éponymes (le Kajoor et le Bawol) dont ils étaient géographiquement les plus proches. Le corpus de la collection a été dans un premier temps collecté dans plusieurs villages ayant conservé la langue, avant de se concentrer sur les villages de Touly et Khoddoba, représentatifs de chacun des dialectes du paloor.

English: The Paloor language, along with those of the other peoples composing the Northwest Seereer, are linguistically classified in the Cangin subgroup of the Atlantic family. The language of the Paloor is Paloor, known in their language as Siili-Silli. The language has two dialects: Paloor-Kajoor, spoken by Paloor people to the north of the geographical area occupied by this ethnolinguistic group, and Paloor-Bawol, spoken by those to the south of the territory.There is full intercomprehension between the two dialects.The differences are phonological and lexical.The language closest to Paloor is Ndut. Although grammatically and lexically close, there is only partial intercomprehension between these two languages. Ndut and Paloor are thought to have originally spoken the same language, which differentiated after they split into two different peoples.
Français: La langue des Paloor avec celles des autres peuples composant les Seereer du Nord-Ouest sont linguistiquement classées dans le sous-groupe Cangin de la famille Atlantique. La langue des Paloor est le paloor appelé dans leur langue Siili-Silli. La langue comporte deux dialectes : le paloor-Kajoor, parlé par les Paloor au nord de la zone géographique occupée par ce groupe ethnolinguistique et le paloor-Bawol, parlé pour ceux au sud du territoire. Il y a intercompréhension totale entre les deux dialectes. Les différences se situent aux niveaux phonologique et lexical. La langue la plus proche du Paloor est le Ndut. Bien que grammaticalement et lexicalement proches, l’intercompréhension entre ces deux langues n’est que partielle. Les Ndut et les Paloor auraient à l’origine parlé la même langue qui se serait différenciée après qu’ils se soient séparés en deux peuples différents.
Collection contents / Le contenu de la collection
English: The collection in its current state includes various types of audio corpus collected for the purposes of a Paloor grammar: controlled corpus (elicitation for the main parts of speech and corresponding paradigms), narratives (life stories, tales, village foundation stories, Paloor history, descriptions of rites). The collection also includes time-aligned transcriptions of part of the corpus (using ELAN software), as well as translations into Wolof (the lingua franca in Senegal and the main language of contact with the Paloor) and French.
Français: La collection dans son état actuel comprend différents types de corpus audio collectés pour les besoins de l’élaboration d’une grammaire du Paloor : du corpus contrôlé (élicitation pour les principales parties du discours et les paradigmes correspondants), des narrations (récits de vie, contes, récits de fondation de villages, histoire des Paloor, descriptions de rites). La collection comprend en outre des transcriptions alignées temporellement d’une partie du corpus (avec le logiciel ELAN), ainsi que des traductions en wolof (langue véhiculaire au Sénégal et principale langue de contact avec les Paloor) et en français.
Other Information / Autres informations
English: In its current state, the collection is a first step in the Paloor preservation process. Although it does not yet include video recordings, the creation of this corpus has made the Paloor community aware of the loss of their language, and has encouraged them to start collecting their own cultural narratives. The results obtained from the grammatical study of the corpus also made it possible for us to contribute to the drafting of a decree governing the orthography of Paloor in 2012 under the supervision of the Direction pour la Promotion des Langues Nationales du Sénégal (now the Direction de l’Alphabétisation et des Langues Nationales).
Français: Dans son état actuel, la collection est un premier pas dans l’entreprise de préservation du paloor. Bien que ne comportant pas encore d’enregistrement vidéo, la constitution de ce corpus a permis à la communauté Paloor de se rendre compte de la déperdition de sa langue et à commencer à collecter elle-même des récits culturels. Les résultats obtenus grâce à l’exploitation grammaticale du corpus nous ont permis par ailleurs de contribuer à l’élaboration d’un décret régissant l’orthographe du paloor en 2012 sous l’égide de la Direction pour la Promotion des Langues nationales du Sénégal (aujourd’hui Direction de l’Alphabétisation et des Langues nationales).
