Summary of the collection

English: This project documents the Iñapari language and cultural memory of the last 4 known speakers. This project will result in a comprehensive grammar of the language, as well as a corpus of naturalistic speech, primarily narrative texts, in Iñapari, being transcribed and translated into Spanish.
Iñapari is an Arawak language in the Purus subgroup closely related to Yine and Apurinã. The level of endangerment is the result of a forced relocation in the 1940s in which the Iñapari people were taken to Bolivia to harvest rubber. The 4 speakers are the descendants of 1 man who escaped with his brother and returned to Peru.
To date, only 4 papers have been published describing preliminary linguistic observations of Iñapari. This project is the first attempt to document a large volume of audiovisual material in Iñapari, and the resulting corpus and grammatical description will be invaluable resources in the study and preservation of the Iñapari language and culture.

Español: Este proyecto documenta la lengua Iñapari y la memoria cultural de los últimos 4 hablantes. Este proyecto dará como resultado una gramática integral del idioma, así como un corpus de habla naturalista, principalmente textos narrativos, en Iñapari, que se transcribirá y traducirá al español.
Iñapari es una lengua arawak del subgrupo Purus estrechamente relacionada con el Yine y el Apurinã. El nivel de peligro lingüístico es el resultado de una reubicación forzada en la década de 1940 en la que el pueblo Iñapari fue llevado a Bolivia para cosechar caucho. Los 4 hablantes son descendientes de 1 hombre que escapó con su hermano y regresó al Perú.
Hasta la fecha, sólo se han publicado 4 artículos que describen observaciones lingüísticas preliminares de Iñapari. Este proyecto es el primer intento de documentar un gran volumen de material audiovisual en Iñapari, y el corpus y la descripción gramatical resultantes serán recursos invaluables en el estudio y preservación de la lengua y cultura de Iñapari.

 

Group represented

English: The group represented in this deposit are the last 4 speakers of Iñapari. The Iñapari people dwelled near Ashipal in the Madre de Dios district of southern Peru until the early 1940s when they were forcibly relocated to Bolivia by rubber tappers. Two brothers were able to escape and return to Peru where they established a very small settlement. The eldest brother was unable to have children. The younger brother took a girl from the Mashco-Piro group to wife and together they had 4 children. These 4 children are now the last known speakers of the Iñapari language. The documentation of Iñapari takes place primarily in the small settlement of Sabaluyoc on the Las Piedras River in the Madre de Dios district.

Español: El grupo representado en este depósito son los últimos 4 hablantes de Iñapari. El pueblo Iñapari vivió cerca de Ashipal en el distrito de Madre de Dios en el sur de Perú hasta principios de la década de 1940, cuando los caucheros los trasladaron a la fuerza a Bolivia. Dos hermanos lograron escapar y regresar al Perú donde establecieron un asentamiento muy pequeño. El hermano mayor no pudo tener hijos. El hermano menor tomó por esposa a una niña del grupo Mashco-Piro y juntos tuvieron 4 hijos. Estos 4 niños son ahora los últimos hablantes conocidos de la lengua Iñapari. La documentación de Iñapari se desarrolla principalmente en el pequeño asentamiento de Sabaluyoc sobre el río Las Piedras en el distrito de Madre de Dios.

 

Language information

English: Iñapari is an Arawak language in the Purus subgroup. It is closely related to Yine and Apurinã. There are 4 known speakers of the language who are descendants of two brothers who escaped enslavement tapping rubber in Bolivia. The language is now only spoken in the Madre de Dios district of Peru. In Bolivia, the language seems to have been lost as the speakers who remained in Bolivia presumably integrated into Spanish-speaking society.
Iñapari’s inclusion in the Arawak language family was established by Valenzuela (1991). The first detailed linguistic description of Iñapari was undertaken by Steven Parker who described the sound system (Parker 1999) and some preliminary morphosyntactic observations (Parker 1995). In 2019 Dr. Chris Rogers and I began working with the speakers. Two papers summarizing the events of the trip and some of our findings resulted (Rogers 2020; 2021). These few papers represent the extent to which Iñapari has been documented to date.

Hay 4 hablantes conocidos del idioma que son descendientes de dos hermanos que escaparon de la esclavitud explotando caucho en Bolivia. El idioma ahora sólo se habla en el distrito de Madre de Dios en Perú. En Bolivia, la lengua parece haberse perdido ya que los hablantes que permanecieron en Bolivia presumiblemente se integraron a la sociedad hispanohablante.
La inclusión de Iñapari en la familia de lenguas arahuacas fue establecida por Valenzuela (1991). La primera descripción lingüística detallada de Iñapari fue realizada por Steven Parker, quien describió el sistema de sonido (Parker 1999) y algunas observaciones morfosintácticas preliminares (Parker 1995). En 2019, el Dr. Chris Rogers y yo comenzamos a trabajar con los hablantes. Como resultado se produjeron dos artículos que resumen los acontecimientos del viaje y algunos de nuestros hallazgos (Rogers 2020; 2021). Estos pocos artículos representan el grado en que Iñapari ha sido documentado hasta la fecha.
