Summary of the collection

English: This collection is a set of recordings of Emplawas and other languages of the Babar Archipelago and other islands of Southwest Maluku. This project was carried out in collaboration between the University of Cologne (Germany) and the University of Pattimura (Ambon) between July 2023 and June 2025.

Program ini adalah kerja sama antara Universitas Cologne (Jerman) dan Universitas Pattimura (Ambon) yang dimulai pada Juli tahun 2023 sampai dengan Juni tahun 2025.

English: Most recordings in this collection are of Emplawas. Emplawas is spoken in a single village of the same name on the southern part of Babar Island. Emplawas village has about 250 residents. The Emplawas people are predominately subsitence farmers and fishers. They plant corn, tubers, taro, cassava and many other crops.

While this collection is focussed on Emplawas, it also contains recordings of other languages of the Babar Archipelago and other islands of Southwest Maluku. This includes the Teun, Nila, and Serua (TNS) languages which used to be spoken on three small volcanic islands of the same namein the Banda Sea. The speakers of these languages were relocated in the 1970s and 1980s to Seram Island and now live on the north-eastern part of the Elpaputih Bay in the district of Teon Nila Serua and the district of Amahai.

Bahasa Indonesia: Kebanyakan rekaman di dalam koleksis ini dari bahasa Emplawas. Orang Emplawas tinggal di satu kampung bernama Emplawas yang berada di bagian selatan Pulau Babar. Penduduk Kampung Emplawas berjumlah sekitar 250 orang. Orang Emplawas hidup dari hasil kebun dan laut. Mereka bercocok tanam jagung, ubi, keladi, singkong, dll.

Walaupun kebanyakan rekaman dari bahasa Emplawas, koleksi ini juga mempunyai rekaman dari bahasa lain di Kepulauan Babar dan dari pulau-pulau lain di Maluku Barat Daya, juga termasuk bahasa Teun, Nila, Serua (TNS) yang penduduknya dulu tinggal di pulau-pulau kecil bergunung api di Laut Banda, tetapi ditransmigrasi pada tahun 1970-an dan 1980-an ke Pulau Seram. Orang TNS sekarang tinggal di bagian timur laut Teluk Elpaputih di Kecamatan Teon Nila Serua dan Kecamatan Amahai.

 

Language information

English: At the beginning of the project only about 13 people were recognised as fluent and competent speakers of the language, though there are many more semi-speakers and those with passive understanding. All Emplawas people also speak Indonesian or Ambon Malay and many of them know other languages of the Babar Islands, such as Tela, Marsela, or Dawera (among others).

All Babar languages are members of the Timor-Babar subgroup which is a member of the large Austronesian family. The languaegs of the Babar Islands are most closely related to other languages of Southwest Maluku and several languages of Timor. The Emplawas language has many unusual morphophonemic processes including: metathesis, consonant mutation, and vowel ablaut, all of which interact in complex ways.

Bahasa Indonesia: Ketika program dimulai pada tahun 2023, ditemui hanya ada sekitar 13 orang yang masih menguasai bahasa Emplawas dan masih bisa berbicara dengan lancar, tetapi banyak orang yang masih bisa berbicara sedikit saja dan mengerti secara pasif. Semua orang Emplawas juga bisa bahasa Indonesia atau bahasa Melayu Ambon. Bahasa lain yang terekam dalam koleksi ini mungkin lebih kuat, tetapi semua terancam punah karena banyak anak muda tidak belajar bahasa dari orang tua mereka. Banyak orang Emplawas juga mengetahui bahasa lain yang ada di Kepulauan Babar, mis. bahasa Tela, bahasa Marsela, bahasa Dawera, dll.

Semua bahasa di Kepulauan Babar dalam koleksi ini termasuk rumpun bahasa Timor-Babar, yang adalah anggota rumpun bahasa Austronesia. Bahasa-bahasa di Kepulauan Babar sangat dekat dengan bahasa lainnya di Mauku Barat Daya dan juga dengan beberapa bahasa di Pulau Timor. Bahasa Emplawas mempunyai banyak proses morfofonemik, termasuk metatesis, perubahan konsonan, dan perubahan vokal. Proses ini luar biasa menarik bagi ahli bahasa.

 

Collection contents

English: This collection currently contains approximately nine hours of naturalistic recordings in Emplawas and one hour in other languages of the region. Most naturalistic recordings are of traditional folktales, family histories, personal narratives, and conversations. Five and a half hours are accompanied by an oral translation and nearly five hours also by a careful repetition of the recording. Just over two hours has been transcribed. In addition to the naturalistic recordings, it contains approximately 18 hours of grammatical and lexical elicitation.

Bahasa Indonesia: Koleksi ini mempunyai sekitar sembilan jam rekaman cerita dalam bahasa Emplawas dan satu jam rekaman dalam bahasa lain dari daerah di Maluku Barat Daya. Kebanyakan rekaman adalah dari dongeng tradisional, sejarah keluarga, pengalaman hidup, dan percakapan. Lima jam setengah berupa rekaman disertai terjemahan lisan dan hampir lima jam berupa pengulangan secara pelan-pelan. Lebih dari dua jam yang sudah berhasil ditranskripsikan. Selain rekaman cerita, koleksi ini juga mempunyai sekitar 18 jam elisitasi leksikal dan gramatikal.
