Summary of the collection

English: This collection represents the ongoing documentation efforts dedicated to the Masep language, resulting in a diverse repository of culturally significant speech practices within a collaborative documentation initiative.
In addition to that, the project has two main foci: 1) language and music 2) language and children.
Both these thematic areas are particularly susceptible to endangerment, making the amassed materials invaluable for fostering interdisciplinary research in these underexplored domains.
To date, the collection encompasses numerous recordings of Masep songs, a diverse array of community folk tales, and creation myths documented in both Masep and an Indonesian/Papuan Malay rendition. Additionally, it includes extensive hours of grammatical elicitation sessions.

As of September 19, 2024, the collection contains at 121h 56m audio/video recordings. Of these recordings, 29h 41m have been transcribed.

Given the ongoing nature of the project, further data will be incorporated in the years ahead, and existing records will be enhanced through additional and improved transcriptions both in Indonesian and English.

Bahasa Indonesia: Koleksi ini merupakan hasil dari upaya dokumentasi bahasa Masep. Program pendokumentasian bahasa Masep terus berlanjut dan bertujuan untuk menghasilkan sebuah repositori yang beragam dari praktik-praktik bahasa yang memiliki nilai budaya dalam sebuah inisiatif dokumentasi kolaboratif. Selain itu, proyek ini memiliki dua fokus utama: 1) bahasa dan musik 2) bahasa dan anak-anak. Kedua area tematik ini sangat rentan terhadap ancaman kepunahan, sehingga bahan yang terkumpul menjadi sangat berharga untuk mendorong penelitian interdisipliner dalam bidang-bidang ini.

Hingga saat ini, koleksi ini mencakup banyak rekaman lagu-lagu Masep, beragam cerita rakyat komunitas, dan mitos penciptaan yang didokumentasikan baik dalam bahasa Masep maupun versi bahasa Indonesia/Melayu Papua. Selain itu, koleksi ini juga mencakup jam rekaman sesi elicitation gramatikal yang sangat panjang.

Per 19 September 2024, koleksi ini mencakup 121 jam 56 menit rekaman audio/video. Dari rekaman tersebut, 29 jam 41 menit telah ditranskripsi.

Mengingat sifat proyek yang masih berlanjut, data tambahan akan dimasukkan di tahun-tahun mendatang, dan catatan yang sudah ada akan ditingkatkan melalui transkripsi tambahan dan perbaikan baik dalam bahasa Indonesia maupun bahasa Inggris.

 

Group represented

English: The group represented in this archive are the Masep or Botafe. Both terms are used interchangeably to denote the community and their language—a usage consistent with the community’s own nomenclature. Residing exclusively in Masep Village (Location: 1°42’30.4″S 138°20’12.0″E), situated along the northern coast of Papua between the regional hub of Sarmi and the mouth of the expansive Mambramo River.
Comprising approximately 120 individuals distributed across around 30 households in Masep Village, the community predominantly consists of the older generation (40 years and older) actively practicing the language. Conversely, the younger generation predominantly employs Indonesian, specifically the regional variant Papuan Malay, in their daily communication. Presently, around 30 individuals are considered active speakers, demonstrating bilingual proficiency in Indonesian/Papuan Malay and, for many, Subu as well.
The Masep communiy comprises approx. 120 individuals, living in approx. 30 housholds in the village Masep. Today, only the older generation (40 years and older) is actively practicing the language on a daily basis, while the younger generation exclusively uses Indonesian usually in its regional variant Papuan Malay. Presently, around 30 individuals are active speakers, demonstrating bilingual proficiency in Indonesian/Papuan Malay and, for many, Subu as well.
The community maintains strong ties with the Subu people, residing approximately 15 km west of Masep. These longstanding connections have resulted in numerous intermarriages, leading to a significant number of fluent bilingual individuals proficient in both Masep and Subu languages.
Notably, the community boasts a vibrant musical tradition, cultivating an extensive repertoire of songs in both Masep and Subu. Regularly practiced, the songs’ instrumental accompaniments are refinded, and the tradition continues to evolve with the creation of new musical compositions.

Bahasa Indonesia: Kelompok yang diwakili dalam arsip ini adalah Masep atau Botafe. Kedua istilah ini digunakan secara bergantian untuk merujuk pada komunitas dan bahasa mereka—penggunaan ini sesuai dengan nomenklatur komunitas itu sendiri. Tempat tinggal eksklusif mereka adalah Desa Masep (Lokasi: 1°42’30.4″S 138°20’12.0″E), yang terletak di pantai utara Papua antara ibu kota kabupaten Sarmi dan muara Sungai Mambramo.
Komunitasnya terdiri dari sekitar 120 individu yang tersebar di sekitar 30 rumah tangga di Desa Masep, dengan pentur aktif terdiri dari generasi lebih tua (40 tahun ke atas). Sebaliknya, generasi muda cenderung menggunakan bahasa Indonesia, khususnya varian regional Papuan Malay, dalam komunikasi sehari-hari mereka. Saat ini, sekitar 30 individu dianggap sebagai penutur aktif, menunjukkan keahlian dwibahasa dalam bahasa Indonesia/Papuan Malay, dan banyak orang, juga fasih dalam bahasa Subu.
Komunitas Masep terus menjalin hubungan erat dengan masyarakat Subu, yang tinggal sekitar 15 km di barat Masep. Hubungan yang sudah lama ini telah menghasilkan banyak perkawinan campur, mengakibatkan banyak individu yang mahir dwibahasa dalam bahasa Masep dan Subu.
Secara khusus, komunitas ini memiliki tradisi musik yang berkembang, membudidayakan repertoar lagu yang luas dalam bahasa Masep dan Subu. Lagu-lagu ini dipraktikkan secara teratur, dengan pengiring instrumental yang disempurnakan, dan tradisi ini terus berkembang dengan penciptaan komposisi musik baru.

 

Language information

English: Massep is classified as isolate (Voorhoeve 1975:3; Hammarström 2017:290) yet this analysis is based on very little publihsed linguistic information. Hurd (1979) provides a wordlist of 173 items and 2 sentences in a handwritten and unpublished manuscript. More information is available in Clouse, Donohue and Ma (2002:6,11-12). They report that Massep is clearly un-related to the Papuan Kwerba-family surrounding it. Furthermore they give a tentative phonology sketch and describe some exemplary features of its morphosyntax. Although providing some valuable insights, Clouse, Donohue and Ma (2002:6) admit that their analysis is only tentative and they provide only four exemplary phrases and no wordlist.

The community itself affirms the linguistic classification of Masep as an isolate, underscoring the distinctiveness of their language in terms of vocabulary and grammatical structures. Significantly, members of the community who are bilingual in Subu (a language belonging to the surrounding Tor-Kwerba family) also confirm that they cannot identify any linguistic connection between the two.

Very little information about languages of the region have been published so far. This archive and the concomittand analysis of the data will contribute to a better understanding of the linguistic situation of the region.

Hurd (1979) menyajikan daftar kata sebanyak 173 item dan 2 kalimat dalam naskah tangan yang tidak dipublikasikan. Informasi lebih lanjut dapat ditemukan dalam Clouse, Donohue, dan Ma (2002:6,11-12). Mereka melaporkan bahwa Masep jelas tidak terkait dengan bahasa-bahasa Papuan Kwerba di sekitarnya. Collection contents

English: The topics of material included in this collection are agreed upon in a collaborative effort between the linguist Christoph Bracks, and the elders of the community Petrus Sauso (currently the elected mayor of the village), Yohan Awawar (the traditional leader\Ondoafi of the community), Yustina Awawar, Endemina Rensinya and Yeremias Sauso (the traditional leader\Ondoafi of the Subu community). Actively involved in the first phase of the project were also Grace Janice Mantiri, lecturer at Cenderawasih University (UNCEN, Jayapura) and two of her students, Ferdinand Dimara and Yohanis Kadiwaru.
Thus far, the archived material include:

1. Approximately 122h of video recordings, featuring Masep language in diverse contexts. This includes approximately 2h 30min dedicated to musical performances and songs, alongside 55h of folk tales, narratives of origin myths, and procedural texts. Additionally, there are interviews conducted in Indonesian, shedding light on various cultural topics.
2. Roughly 32h of elicitation sessions addressing various grammatical topics, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the language’s structural nuances.
3. A FLEx database, housing a dictionary comprising 1680 entries, available also as a downloadable PDF.
4. Ethnobotanical insights, notably a compilation of bird names with corresponding Masep names, English equivalents, scientific classifications, and accompanying visuals. This information is also accessible in PDF format.

Considering the continuous nature of the project, we anticipate the inclusion of additional data in the years to come, coupled with the improvement of existing records through more and improved transcriptions.

English: The project will commence in July 2023 and is financed by an ELDP Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant (IPF0421), awarded to Christoph Bracks for the period from July 2023 to July 2025.
