Summary of the collection

English: The collection of the Júma variety of Kawahíva (Tupí-Guaraní, Brazil) contains several audio recordings of the basic vocabulary of this variety of the language, including 200 kinship terms. The recordings were elicited in Portuguese and translated into the language with the help of fluent speaker Boreá Juma, one of the three speakers of Júma. An aspect of the Kawahíva lexicon that stands out is the existence of kinship terms for deceased kins that are completely unrelated to the terms for alive kins.

As gravações foram elicitadas em Português e traduzidas para a língua com a ajuda da falante fluente Boréa Juma, uma das três falantes do Juma. Group represented

English: The community represented in this collection is the Juma. They are one of the eight ethnically different indigenous communities living in the Amazon basin in Brazil. Besides the ethnic differences, these communities recognize themselves as culturally proximal and choose to refer to themselves as Kawahíva ‘indigenous person’. In addition, the Juma live in a single village in the Juma Indigenous Land, in the state of Amazonas.

Português: O povo representado nesta coleção é o povo Juma. O Juma é parte de um complexo linguístico-cultural de oito povos etnicamente distintos nativos da bacia amazônica no Brasil. Apesar das diferenças étnicas, esses povos se reconhecem como povos culturalmente próximos e referem a si como Kawahiva ‘indígena’. Ademais, os Juma vivem na única aldeia Juma na Terra Indígena Juma, no estado do Amazonas.

 

Language information

English: Júma is one of the language variants of Kawahíva spoken in Brazil, an understudied and severely endangered language belonging to the Tupí-Guaraní language family.
All Kawahíva communities speak highly mutually intelligible language varieties, which they refer to by the communities’ names. According to a language survey by Wesley dos Santos, conducted in 2017 under the auspices of the Brazilian National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN in Portuguese), the Kawahíva population totaled around 1060 individuals, with a speaker population of some 525 individuals across the eight communities.
The Juma population is 20 people, among whom there are three fluent speakers and a dozen passive bilinguals. The latter comprise individuals in the age range of 14-25 years old.

Português: O Juma é uma variedade do Kawahíva, uma língua pouco estudada e severamente ameaçada de extinção falada no Brasil, que pertence à família linguística Tupi-Guarani.
Todos os povos Kawahiva falam variedades da língua com alta inteligibilidade mútua, às quais esses povos chamam pelo nome do povo. De acordo com um levantamento realizado pelo linguista Wesley dos Santos em 2017, sob os auspicíos do IPHAN (Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional), a população Kawahiva totalizava algo em torno de 1060 indivíduos, com cerca de 525 falantes da língua.
Os Juma, por sua vez, somam mais de 20 pessoas, dos quais três são falantes fluentes da língua e aproximadamente 12 são bilíngue-passivos. A respeito dos bilíngue-passivos, estes têm entre 14 e 25 anos de idade.

 

Special characteristics

English: The collection also includes recordings of the kinship terms, with 200 items. A notorious aspect of Kawahíva kinship terms is the existence of specialized words for deceased kins, without any etymological connection with the kinship words used for alive kins.

English: This collection includes audio recordings of the Kawahíva basic vocabulary, which contains almost 900 lexical items, mostly represented by the major lexical categories in the languages (e.g., nouns and verbs), postpositions, and adverbials.
