Summary of the collection / Resumen de la colección

English: In this project we aim to undertake a documentation of our language with an emphasis on the speech and narratives from our Curacas (elder traditional healers). Only 5 Curacas are left in our community, who hold all of the fundamental wisdom of our group. With this documentation we seek to produce audiovisual data to be transcribed (into A’ingae, using an established orthography) and translated into Spanish for us, as younger generation, to be able to promote this knowledge, further study it, and celebrate our language as spoken by these elder members of our community. During the documention process, we willl also reach out to A’ingae speakers from other communities within the Colombian Putumayo area, as a strategy to include other voices representative of our language and culture.

Group represented / Grupo representado

English: In the Cofán community of Nueva Isla, at the lower Putumayo area in southern Colombia, there are today only 5 elder speakers of our language A’ingae (also referred to as Kofán, Cofán). A’ingae is an isolated language whose speakers are distributed transnationally in the Putumayo area of Colombia and the Napo River in Ecuador. At least some 1,200 individuals identify ethnically as Cofán, while the number of speakers of the language is much less than some 400 in Colombia, including in this figure different levels of fluency and competence (from passive speakers to very competent).
