Group represented
English: The Maya peoples are an ethnolinguistic group of indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica. The ancient Maya civilization was formed by members of this group, and today’s Maya are generally descended from people who lived within that historical region. Today they inhabit southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. One of the largest groups of Maya live in the Yucatan Peninsula, which includes the Mexican states of Yucatán State, Campeche, and Quintana Roo as well as the nation of Belize. Harald Thomaß made language recordings in this region from 1995 to 2019 in different places but mainly in the town of Maní, in the state of Yucatan, also in Oxkutzcab,Yaxcaba, Sitilpech and Hecelchakan in the state of Campeche. These people identify theirselves as “Maya” with no further ethnic subdivision (unlike in the Highlands of Western Guatemala). They speak the language which anthropologists term “Yucatec Maya”, but is identified by speakers and Yucatecos simply as “Maya”. Among Maya speakers, Spanish is commonly spoken as a second or first language. Yucatecan Maya belongs to the so-called Yucatecan branch of the Mayan languages, which also includes Mopan, Itzá and Lacandon. With around 800,000 speakers, it is one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages in Mexico.

La antigua civilización maya estaba formada por miembros de este grupo, y los mayas actuales descienden generalmente de personas que vivieron en esa región histórica. Hoy habitan en el sur de México, Guatemala, Belice, El Salvador y Honduras. Uno de los mayores grupos de mayas vive en la península de Yucatán, que incluye los estados mexicanos de Yucatán, Campeche y Quintana Roo, así como la nación de Belice. Harald Thomaß realizó grabaciones lingüísticas en esta región de 1995 a 2019 en diferentes lugares pero principalmente en el pueblo de Maní, en el estado de Yucatán, también en Oxkutzcab,Yaxcaba, Sitilpech y Hecelchakan en el estado de Campeche. Estos pueblos se identifican a sí mismos como “mayas” sin ninguna otra subdivisión étnica (a diferencia de las tierras altas del oeste de Guatemala). Hablan la lengua que los antropólogos denominan “maya yucateco”, pero que los hablantes y yucatecos identifican simplemente como “maya”. Entre los mayahablantes, el español suele hablarse como segunda o primera lengua. El maya yucateco pertenece a la llamada rama yucateca de las lenguas mayas, que también incluye el mopán, el itzá y el lacandón. English: Yucatec Maya referred to by its speakers simply as Maya or as màaya t’aan is a Mayan language spoken in the Yucatán Peninsula, including part of northern Belize. In the Mexican states of Yucatán, some parts of Campeche, Tabasco, Chiapas, and Quintana Roo, Yucatec Maya is still the mother tongue of a large segment of the population in the early 21st century. It has approximately 800,000 speakers in this region. There were an additional 2,500 speakers of Yucatec Maya in Belize as of the 2010 national census.

Collection contents
English: The collection is the result of private research between the years 1995 and 2010 with the aim of documenting the prayers of Yucatecan Maya ritual specialists at various sites. Primarily, Harald Thomaß, documented ritual specialists performing rituals in an agrarian and healing context. The informants were selected according to regional criteria, so that dialectal variants may be represented in the collection. The collection includes audio recordings and photographs.

Español: La colección es el resultado de una investigación privada realizada entre 1995 y 2010 con el objetivo de documentar las oraciones de los especialistas rituales mayas yucatecos en diversos sitios. En primer lugar, el investigador Harald Thomaß ha documentado a los especialistas en rituales en un contexto agrario y curativo. Los informantes se seleccionaron según criterios regionales, para que las variantes dialectales estén representadas en la colección. La colección incluye grabaciones de audio y fotografías.
