Summary of the collection

English: Documentation Project of the mythology and history of the Mbya (in Southern Brazil), funded by the EDLP between 2022 and 2024. The work is a collaboration of the anthropologist Gustavo Godoy and the Mbya people (especially from the Takuaty village, Paranaguá, Paraná). The project counts on the association of consultants and researchers who speak the language in question, especially Juliana Kerexu Mirĩ. The emphasis of the deposit is the mythological heritage, biographical accounts, and historical reports, especially the Jesuit heritage. But the collection also includes texts about topics associated with or cited in the myths, as well as other genres such as chants, recordings of rituals, ethnographic interviews, etc. Audiovisual recordings emphasize the importance of documenting the gesticulations that occur together with speech and make up the narrative event. In the present proposal, the gesture is understood as an integral part of the language. The proposal aims to study the gestural inventory and gesture-speech units in Mbya, and archive their mythical corpus.

A ênfase do depósito é o patrimônio mitológico, relatos biográficos e relatos históricos, especialmente o patrimônio jesuíta.

Group represented

English: In the west, the Mbya people inhabit the Paraná River basin and adjacent regions, their territory to the east extends to the south and southeast coast of present-day Brazil. There are also groups that live in the Araguaia river basin and in the Pará Amazon. Although the Mbya territory is spread across different Brazilian states, as well as Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, its Indigenous Lands are small and surrounded by large cities, cattle ranches and agricultural monocultures. Indeed, the smallest Indigenous Land in Brazil is a Mbya land, located in the city of São Paulo. The Mbya people were one of the peoples that integrated the construction of the Jesuit province of Paraguay, which formerly encompassed what is now southern Brazil, as well as eastern Paraguay and northwest Argentina.
