Summary of the collection

English: The deposit is the result of a project to document the Tidikelt-Tuat Tamazight language, funded by ELDP between 2022 and 2024. The project is the result of a collaboration between linguists and researchers who participated in the design of the deposit content as well as the collection, transcription, and translation of the data. The data will encompass a wide variety of genres and topics and will all be recorded in video, as well as audio.

Français: Le dépôt est le résultat d’un projet de documentation de la langue Tidikelt-Tuat Tamazight, financé par ELDP entre 2022 et 2024. Le projet est le fruit d’une collaboration entre linguistes et chercheurqui ont participé à la conception du contenu du dépôt ainsi qu’à la collecte, la transcription et la traduction des données. Les données engloberont une grande variété de genres et de sujets et seront toutes enregistrées en vidéo, ainsi qu’en audio.

 

Group represented

English: The group represented in this deposit are the berber of In Salah (Algeria). Although the region has been, for the most part, “Arabized” by language and Islamic culture over the centuries, there are still eldres how still speak their language and they have retained much of their original Berber traditions and characteristics. This documentation project will be carried out primarily in In Salah, and the surrounding localities located on the road to Reggane: Aoulef, Tit, Akabil and In Ghar.

Français: Le groupe représenté dans ce dépôt est celui des berbères d’In Salah (Algérie). Bien que la région ait été, pour la plupart, “arabisée” par la langue et la culture islamique au cours des siècles, il y a encore des anciens qui parlent encore leur langue et ils ont conservé une grande partie de leurs traditions et caractéristiques berbères originales. Ce projet de documentation sera réalisé principalement à In Salah, et dans les localités environnantes situées sur la route de Reggane : Aoulef, Tit, Akabil et In Ghar.

 

Special characteristics

English: This deposit is the result of a collaborative effort between Samir Ben Si Said and CNRS researchers Lameen Souag and Alexis Michaud. The subjects of the documentation were selected by the whole research team, and the inhabitants of In Salah and its surroundings kindly contributed to the project by offering their time and knowledge.
The uniqueness of this collection lies in the fact that most of the documents deposited are quite naturalistic interactions between native speakers. They have been transcribed, translated, and annotated for culturally significant information.
The documentation of the language focuses primarily on life stories and culturally salient practices that were conducted by Samir Ben Si Said.

Français: Ce dépôt est le résultat d’un effort de collaboration entre Samir Ben Si Said et des chercheurs du CNRS : Lameen Souag et Alexis Michaud. Les sujets de documentation ont été sélectionnés par l’ensemble de l’équipe de recherche, et les habitants de In Salah et ses environs ont aimablement contribué au projet en offrant leur temps et leurs connaissances.
La particularité de cette collection réside dans le fait que la plupart des documents déposés sont des interactions assez naturalistes entre locuteurs natifs. Ils ont été transcrits, traduits et annotés pour des informations culturellement importantes.
La documentation de la langue est axée principalement sur les récits de vie et les pratiques culturelles saillantes qui ont a été réalisée par Samir Ben Si Said.

 

Collection contents

English: The data that can be found in this collection contains 50 hours of naturalistic data and 31 hours of elicitation. It also contains 25 hours transcribed, translated and further annotated in ELAN and FLEx. The recordings of naturalistic data contain personal and life stories, tales, songs, dances, riddles, poems, discussions on topics like rituals at weddings and funerals, ecology, cosmology, agriculture and beliefs.

Français: Les données que l’on peut trouver dans cette collection contiennent 50 heures de données naturalistiques et 31 heures d’élicitation. Elles contiennent également 25 heures transcrites, traduites et annotées dans ELAN et FLEx. Les enregistrements de données naturalistiques contiennent des histoires personnelles et de vie, des contes, des chansons, des danses, des devinettes, des poèmes, des discussions sur des sujets tels que les rituels de mariage et de funérailles, l’écologie, la cosmologie, l’agriculture et les croyances.

 

Collection history

English: The project from which this deposit originated was financed by an ELDP Individual Postdoctoral Followship (IPF0384), awarded to Samir Ben Si Said, for the period from September 2022 to September 2024.
Data collection for this project begin in November 2022, when Samir start the first fieldwork period. From November 2022 to April 2023 the research team work on documenting the Tidikelt-Tuat Tamazight language and cultural practices. When Samir leave in April, the other members of the research team continue working on the transcription and translation of the collected data and the data collection.
The second period of documentation fieldwork take place between September 2023 and April 2024. The data collection continue during the whole fieldwork period, and after that the local reaserchers continue transcribing and translating until April 2024.

Français: Le projet à l’origine de ce dépôt a été couvert par un financement ELDP Individual Postdoctoral Followship (IPF0384), attribué à Samir Ben Si Said, pour la période de septembre 2022 à septembre 2024.
La collecte de données pour ce projet commence en novembre 2022, lorsque Samir commence la première période de travail sur le terrain. De novembre 2022 à avril 2023, l’équipe de recherche travaille à la documentation de la langue et des pratiques culturelles tamazight de Tidikelt-Tuat. Lorsque Samir part en avril, les autres membres de l’équipe de recherche continuent à travailler sur la transcription et la traduction des données collectées et sur la collecte des données.
La deuxième période du travail de documentation sur le terrain a lieu entre septembre 2023 et avril 2024. La collecte des données se poursuit pendant toute la période de travail sur le terrain, puis les chercheurs locaux continuent la transcription et la traduction jusqu’en avril 2024.
