Summary of the collection

English: This collection results from the documentation of Djeoromitxí (Jaboti branch, Macro-Jê grouping), a severely endangered language. The Djeoromitxí people live in the indigenous lands, T.I. Rio Guaporé and T.I. Rio Branco, in southern Rondonia, Amazonia, Brazil. The work will train the Djeoromitxí speakers in documentation to lay the groundwork to generate a documentary corpus in video, audio, texts, and linguistically annotated ELAN files, covering a wide range of discourse types and genres. Other goals are to elaborate a lexical database for a preliminary Portuguese-Djeoromitxí dictionary and to understand the aspects of grammar of the language for a preliminary grammar book. This documentation is quite urgent, once Djeoromitxí has become severely threatened (comprising only 23 fluent and 12 quasi-fluent speakers out of a population of 157).

Português: Esta coleção é um resultado do projeto de documentação da língua e da cultura do povo Djeoromitxí (família Jaboti, agrupamento linguístico Macro-Jê), uma língua severamente ameaçada. O povo Djeoromitxí vive nas terras indígenas, T.I. Rio Guaporé e T.I. Rio Branco, no Sul de Rondônia, Amazônia, Brasil. O trabalho usará uma metodologia de base comunitária, de modo que iremos treinar os participantes da comunidade Djeoromitxí com técnicas de documentação linguística para que eles participem diretamente na produção de um corpus documental em vídeo, áudio, textos e arquivos ELAN anotados linguisticamente, cobrindo uma ampla gama de tipos e gêneros de discurso. Outros objetivos são a elaboração de um banco de dados lexicais para a produção de um dicionário multimídia Português-Djeoromitxí e um corpus sobre dados gramaticais para produzir uma gramática preliminar da língua. Esta documentação é bastante urgente, uma vez que Djeoromitxí é uma língua severamente ameaçada (compreendendo apenas 23 falantes fluentes e 12 semi-fluentes de uma população de 157 indivíduos).

 

Group represented

English: The group represented in this collection is Djeoromitxí, belonging to Jaboti family, Macro-Jê grouping . They are currently living in two official indigenous lands, T.I. Rio Branco, and T.I. Rio Guaporé, located in the state of Rondônia, to where the people were forcibly brought in 1960. Most of the people live in four villages in the T.I. Guaporé: Ricardo Franco, Coca Bay, Rica Bay, and Onças Bay.

The people share the area with nine other ethnic groups, who speak distinct and unrelated languages. Various factors, including frequent interaction with other groups, interethnic marriage, and contact with the non-Indian community, have led most of the indigenous people to speak Portuguese rather than their mother language, leading to the endangerment of Djeoromitxí. In the village of Ricardo Franco, for example, there are nine different indigenous groups, each one with its language and cultural practices.

In a sociolinguistic survey conducted by Dr. Denny Moore, he attested that there are only 35 speakers of the language out of a population of 157. Specifically, there are 23 fluent speakers, 12 with reasonable fluency, 48 can only understand (semi-speakers or passive speakers), and the other ones cannot speak the language.

Português: O grupo representado nessa coleção é Djeoromitxí, pertencente à família Jaboti, do agrupamento Macro-Jê. Eles vivem atualmente em duas Terras Indígenas, Rio Guaporé e Rio Branco, no estado de Rondônia, Brasil, para onde foram forçadamente levados em 1960. A maioria deles vive em quatro aldeias na T.I. Rio Guaporé.

Eles compartilham a área com outros nove grupos, falantes de diferentes línguas. Vários fatores, incluindo frequente interação com outros grupos, casamentos interétnicos, contato com a população não-indígena, têm levado a maioria deles a falar português ao invés de sua língua materna, causando o iminente risco de desaparecimento. Na aldeia Ricardo Franco, por exemplo, há nove grupos indígenas diferentes, cada um com sua língua e práticas culturais.

Em uma pesquisa sociolinguística conduzida pelo Dr. Denny Moore, foi constatado que somente 35 Djeoromitxí falam a língua de uma população de 157. Especificamente, 23 deles são fluentes, 12 com uma razoável fluência, 48 podem entender a língua, sendo que os demais não falam mais a língua.

 

Special characteristics

English: This collection results from a collaborative documentation using a community-based methodology in which the community members have been trained to conduct the recording sessions and to plan which linguistic and cultural aspects are more urgent to register.

What makes this collection special is the fact that all materials recorded will be used not only for documentation proposals but also to attend to a demand of the community, that is to create materials for revitalization efforts. The recordings are focused on naturalistic interactions between native speakers. They are transcribed and translated, when applicable, by themselves with support of the linguist.

Português: Esta coleção é um resultado de um trabalho de documentação colaborativo, usando metodologia de base comunitária em que membros da comunidade de falantes têm sido treinados para conduzir as sessões de gravações e para planejar quais aspectos linguísticos e culturais são mais urgentes de serem registrados.

Aspectos que fazem essa coleção especial são que os materiais gravados foram planejados não apenas para atender as propostas de documentação, mas atender uma das demandas da comunidade que é a produção de materiais que possam ser usados nos esforços de revitalização da língua. As gravações são focadas em interações naturalísticas entre falantes da língua e as transcrições e traduções, quando aplicável, são feitas por eles próprios com a particapção do linguista.

 

Collection contents

English: This collection provides comprehensive documentation and a transparent and detailed description of the Djeoromitxí language, comprising a corpus of at least 50 hours of texts in audio and video (total), and annotated texts in ELAN files, in a different context of language in use, and in multiple genres.

The content of this collection includes, among others:

Recordings of multiple communicative events, with particular emphasis on traditional verbal art performance involving narrative, song; and targeting a wide range of discourse genres and types.

Recordings of elicited data, transcribed in Djeoromitxí orthography, and translated into Portuguese.

Texts annotated, analyzed, and time-aligned in EAF files;

A lexical database of Djeoromitxí Language with approximately 2000 entries in FLEX and a pilot multimedia dictionary off-line web-based.

A preliminary (sketch of) Djeoromitxí grammar based on natural text/speech.

Photography collection (cultural heritage, people, flora, fauna, traditional agriculture, landscape, architecture, natural events, craftwork, etc.).

Português: Esta coleção fornece documentação abrangente e uma descrição transparente e detalhada da língua Djeoromitxí, compreendendo um corpus de pelo menos 50 horas de textos em áudio e vídeo (total), e textos anotados em arquivos ELAN, em diferentes contextos de uso da língua e em vários gêneros.

O conteúdo dessa coleção inclui, entre outros:

Arquivos de áudio e vídeo de múltiplos eventos comunicativos, como performances de arte verbal, como narrativas, músicas tradicionais e eventos comunicativos sobre a vida cotidiana, almejando uma ampla gama de diferentes tipos e gêneros de discursos.
