Documentation of Oubi

Summary of the collection

English: The collection is a result of a documentation of the Oubi language as spoken in Côte d’Ivoire by native speakers. The project was undertaken as an unpaid effort by a non-linguist with the help of her native speaker colleagues at the Tai Chimpanzee Project. The deposited data mainly consists of word lists, basic grammar and life history of the oldest male speaker of Oubi.

Français: Le dépôt est le résultat d’une documentation de la langue Oubi telle que parlée en Côte d’Ivoire par des locuteurs natifs. Le projet a été entrepris à titre bénévole par une non-linguiste avec l’aide de ses collègues locuteurs natifs du Tai Chimpanzee Project. Les données déposées consistent principalement en des listes de mots, une grammaire de base et une histoire de vie du plus ancien locuteur masculin de l’Oubi.

Group represented

English: The group represented in this collection are the Oubi of Côte d’Ivoire, and their language, also called Oubi. The speakers who participated all spoke fluent French as well (in contrast to the Oubi speakers over the border in Libera who often speak Liberian English as a second language). This documentation project was mainly carried out in Tai National Park, at the Tai Chimpanzee Project amongst its Oubi staff, colleagues of the depositor, who is not a linguist. Other participants included the Oubi ‘patriarch’, the oldest male Oubi, called Toubaté Georges, who contributed a bilingual life history.

Special characteristics

English: This collection is the result of the collaborative efforts of a non-linguist, Jenny Jaffe, and 13 native Oubi speakers, mainly colleagues at the Tai Chimpanzee Project. The topics for documentation were guided by linguist Sebastian Nordhoff, as well as by Jenny’s personal interest. As there is very little information about Oubi available in the public realm, this information, though basic, is unique and cannot be found anywhere else.

Of potential linguistic and socio-cultural importance is the 45 minute long life history of Toubaté George, the oldest speaker of Oubi (88 years old at the time of the interview). He speaks about his fascinating life (including a stint as a soldier for the French army in Indochine) in both French and Oubi.

Collection history

English: The project from which this collection originated was undertaken without any financing. Data collection started in June 2019, when Jenny Jaffe started working at the Tai Chimpanzee Project as the resident veterinarian. Till the end of her field period in October 2020, she took the opportunities available to gather information about Oubi from her colleagues and from Oubi villagers near Tai National Park.

La collecte des données a commencé en juin 2019, lorsque Jenny Jaffe a commencé à travailler au Tai Chimpanzee Project en tant que vétérinaire résidente. Jusqu’à la fin de sa période sur le terrain en octobre 2020, elle a saisi les opportunités disponibles pour recueillir des informations sur Oubi auprès de ses collègues et des villageois d’Oubi près du parc national de Tai.

Other Information

English: Orthographic convention: The Oubi orthography used in the transcriptions is not fully consistent, mainly using French orthography with some Dutch influences. The nasalised n at the end of syllabes (similar to as in the French word ‘pain’) is written with a capital N. In one of the documents (Oubi words and phrases) both French and English orthography options are given for most words. As the written orthography gives no information at all about tonality, which can be crucial for word meaning, the recordings particularly important.
