Group represented
English: This collection includes recordings in and about the Seke language from the lower part of Upper Mustang in northern Nepal, including the varieties spoken in the town of Tshugsang (Chhusang), Tsangle (Chele), Timi (Tetang), Gyugu (Gyakar), and Tangbe. Also included are speakers based in Pokhara, Kathmandu, and New York City, where many Seke speakers from all five villages now live.

Language information
English: Seke, a little-documented Tibeto-Burman language of the Tamangic branch, has at most 700 speakers from five villages of the Mustang District in northern Nepal. Today the language is highly endangered, with few speakers under 40 years old, large-scale outmigration of all but the elderly, and even older speakers shifting to Nepali.

नेपाली: सेके,तामाङगि शाखाको निम्न -अभिलेख भएको तिब्बती-बर्मन भाषा , उत्तरी नेपालको मुस्ताङ जिल्लाका पाँचवटा गाउँका बढीमा ७०० जनाले मात्र बोल्छन। ४० वर्ष भन्दा कम उमेरका केही भाषीहरुमात्र भएको, सबै बासिन्दा र बृद्धाहरुको समेत ठूलो मात्रामा बाह्रय प्रबास र वृद्धा पिढिहरु पनि नेपाली भाषातर्फ उन्मुख भएको कारणले आज यो भाषा अत्यधिक लोपोन्मुख अवस्थामा छ।
Special characteristics
English: Some Seke speakers trace their language’s roots to the ancient Zhangzhung area in western Tibet, and there is recognition that other parts of what is now Loke-speaking Baragaon (the lower part of Upper Mustang) were also once Seke-speaking, too. As many narratives attest, rapid change has transformed Mustang in the last few decades, between major outmigration, the opening of the area to tourists, the loss of much of the area’s traditional independence, and inroads made by Nepali culture. Today’s Seke-speaking elders reiterate that they are not only the last generation who know the language fully, but also the last who remember the older lifeways and stories of the Seke-speaking villages. However, multilingualism and language contact have been a constant in the Seke-speaking area for many centuries, as frequent reference to and mixing with forms of Tibetan, Loke, and Nepali demonstrate.

नेपाली: केही सेके भाषीहरूले आफ्नो भाषाको पुर्ख्यौली मूल पश्चिमी तिब्बतको प्राचीन झाङझुङ क्षेत्र भएको संकेत गर्छन् साथै हाल लोके-भाषी बासिन्दाको बाह्रगाउँ (माथिल्लो मुस्ताङको तल्लो भाग) को अन्य भागका बासिन्दा पनि सेके-भाषीहरु नै थिए भन्ने मान्यता छ। पर्यटकका लागि यस क्षेत्रको खुलापन, यस क्षेत्रले गुमाएको परम्परागत स्वाधीनता र नेपाली संस्कृतिले बनाएको प्रवेशको बिचमा बृहत् बाह्य प्रबासले पछिल्ला केही दशकमा भएका द्रुत परिवर्तनले मुस्ताङलाई रूपान्तरण गरेको तथ्य धेरै कथनहरूले प्रमाणित गर्छन। आजका सेके भाषी बृद्धहरु आफुलाई सेके भाषा पूर्ण रूपमा जान्ने अन्तिम पुस्ता मात्र होइन, सेके बोलिने गाउँका पुराना जीवनशैली र कथाहरू सम्झने अन्तिम पुस्ता पनि हौं भनी दोहोर्याउँछन्। यद्यपि, बहुभाषिकता र भाषिक सम्पर्क धेरै शताब्दीदेखि सेके-भाषी क्षेत्रमा निरन्तर र प्रचुर मात्रामा रहँदै आएको छ, जसमा तिब्बती, लोके र नेपाली रूपहरूको सेके भाषामा परेको कुरा बारम्बार सन्दर्भ र मिश्रणले देखाउँछ।

Collection history
English: Currently available in the collection are recordings made during fieldwork in 2019 and 2023. Some of the earlier recordings were transcribed, translated, and analyzed during 2020-2022 in New York. More recent recordings, featuring a wider range of material, are gradually being worked on and will be made available beginning in 2024.

नेपाली: हाल सङ्कलनमा उपलब्ध सामग्री, सन् २०१९ र २०२३ मा स्थलगत कार्यमा तयार पारिएका भिडियो रेकर्डिङहरू हुन् । केही रेकर्डिङहरू न्युयोर्कमा सन् २०२०-२०२२ मा अक्षरमा उतारिएका ,अनुवादीत साथै विश्लेषित छन्। तत्काल उपलब्ध रेकर्डिङहरू, बृहत सामग्री चित्रित गरिएका छन् , र क्रमगत रुपमा कार्य गरिदै गरिएकोले सन् २०२४ को शुरुमा उपलब्ध गराइने छ ।
