Summary of the collection

English: Mehri is spoken in the south of the Arabian Peninsula, specifically in al-Mahrah, eastern Yemen, Dhofar in southern Oman and eastern parts of Saudi Arabia. This project focusses on the tight human-environment relationship in al-Mahrah through documenting and analysing nature-related texts in Mehri as spoken in Yemen. As al-Mahrah is the one safe enclave in a country that has been at war since 2011, migration from non-Mehri speakers from other provinces in Yemen is increasing on a daily basis, exacerbating the endangerment of both local language and ecosystems.

The project began in 2017 by engaging trained documenters from southern Oman to train local Yemeni community members including members of the Mehri Center for Studies and Research at Mahrah University, Yemen in documentation, ethical research and archiving. Dr Saeed al-Qumairi also attended a training workshop hosted by ELDP in Berlin on the documentation of endangered languages in the Middle East and North Africa. Trained community members produced 25 hours of audio/audio-visual recordings, of which c. 75% of the recordings are audio-visual recordings. We are currently working with Dr Jack Wilson, University of Salford, on these materials for research into communication gesture.

In 2023, Dr al-Qumairi was awarded a British Council International Research Fellowship to work with Janet Watson on Mehri ecopoetry at the University of Leeds. 191 audio-visual and audio files were collected and archived on this topic. From these materials, we have produced a journal article on the role of nature in Mehri children’s rhymes with Andrea Boom, and are currently working on a Mehri debate poem.

المهرية هي لغة محكية يتحدث بها في جنوب الجزيرة العربية، تحديداً في محافظة المهرة شرق اليمن، ومحافظة ظفار جنوب عمان ، وبعض الاجزاء الشرقية من المملكة العربية السعودية. يركّز هذا المشروع على الترابط المتين بين الإنسان والبيئة في محافظة المهرة اليمنية شرقي اليمن، وذلك من خلال توثيق وتحليل النصوص المتعلقة بالطبيعة في المهرية المحكية في اليمن.

بما أن محافظة المهرة هي المقاطعة الأكثر أمناً في اليمن الذي يخوض حربامنذ عام 2011، ، فإن نزوح الكثير من الغير الناطقين بالمهرية من المحافظات البمنبة الأخرى إلى المهرة يشكل خطرا كبيرا على بقاء اللغة، ونظامها الايكولوجي.

بدأ المشروع في عام 2017 من خلال إشراك مدربين متخصصين في عملية التوثيق اللغوي من جنوب عمان لتدريب بعض أعضاء مركز اللغة المهرية بجامعة المهرة على آلية توثيق اللغات، واخلاقيات البحث، وأرشفتها. وفي العاصمة الألمانية برلين، حضر الدكتور سعيد القميري ورشة تدريبية في توثيق اللغات المهددة بالانقراض في الشرق الأوسط وشمال افريقيا.

قام المتدربون بتوثيق 25 ساعة من التسجيلات ما يفارب 75% منها هي تسجيلات سمعية وبصرية. وفي الفترة الحالية، نحن نعمل على هذه ىالمواد مع الدكتور جاك ويلسون من جامعة سالفورد في البحث حول الإماءات في الأتصال اللغوي.

وفي عام 2023، حصل الدكتور سعيد القميري على زمالة بحثية من المجلس البريطاني للعمل مع جانيت واتسون في جامعة ليدز البريطانية. تم تجميع وأرشفة 191 مادة سمعية وبصرية حول الموضوع. ومن هذه المواد قمنا بنشر بحث عن شعر الأطفال في المهرية، شاركنا في هذا البحث الباحثة اندريا بوم من جامعة ليدز. وحاليا نقوم على نشر بحث آخر عن شعر المحاورة في اللغة المهرية.

Group represented

English: The group represented are all members of the Mehri tribe. The material within this collection includes that recorded from members of the following Mehri sub-tribes: Bit ‘Afrar, Bit Ali Muqaddam, Bit Yasir, Bit Ra’fit, Bit al-Qumairi, Bit Kalshat, Bit al-Jaydah, Bit Za’banot, Bit Balhaf, Bit Bakrayt, Bit al-Mashikhi, Bit al-Hashimi, Bit Ziyad, Bit Sha’gul, Bit Malazi, Bit Yashul, Bit Sarfayt, Bit Barkah , Bit Mhamid, Bit Thu’ar, Bit Maghfiq, Bit al-Haraizi, Bit al-Manhali, Bit Ghashwaq, Bit al-Amudi, and Bit al-Slaymi. This collection also exemplifies dialects spoken in different regions of al-Mahrah, including al-Ghaydhah, Hawf, Swayl, Qishn, Shahn and Sayhut.

هم أفراد تجمعهم مظلة قبيلة المهرة، وبعض القبائل الساكنة في المحافظة، التي تنقسم إلى عدد كبير من البيوت [بيت هُنا بمعنى عشيرة أو فخيذة]. جُمعت المادة التي يشملها هذه المجموع من أفراد عشيرة، بيت عفرار، وبيت علي مقدم، وبيت ياسر، وبيت رعفيت، والقميري، وبيت كلشات، وبيت جيدح، وبيت زعبنوت، وبيت بلحاف، وبيت باكريت، والمشيخي، والهاشمي، وبيت زياد، وبيت شعجول، وبيت ملازي، وبيت يسهول، وبيت صرفيت، وبيت بركه، وبيت محامد، ، وبيت ثوعار، وبيت مغفيق، وبين الحريزي ، وبيت المنهالي، وبيت غشواق، وبيت العمودي، وبيت السليمي. حيث مثلت هذه المجموعة بعض لهجات مديريات محافظة المهرة اليمينة، مثلا: مديرية الغيضة، وحوف، وصويل، وقشن، وشحن، وسيحوت.

Language information

English: Different names include Mahriyot for eastern Yemeni Mehri, and Mehreyyet for the Mehri spoken by tribes based in and around Dhofar. It is currently spoken in al-Mahrah, the eastern province of Yemen, Dhofar, the southern province of Oman, and southern and south-eastern Saudi Arabia with communities in other Gulf states, including Kuwait, the UAE and Qatar, and in some states in East Africa, including Tanzania and Kenya. The number of speakers is estimated around 200,000 – 300,000, although we cannot be sure of the actual number of speakers due to lack of census figures for speaker communities.

يطلق على اللغة المهرية أسماء مختلفة مثل مهريوت في شرق اليمن، ومهرييت التي يتكلم بها أفراد القبائل والفخائذ المهرية في محافظة ظفار وحولها، ويتكلم بها أيضا معظم سكان البوادي والمناطق الغربية في محافظة المهرة اليمنية. وبشكل عام، يتوزع متحدثو اللغة المهرية في الجمهورية اليمنية تحديدا في محافظة المهرة شرقي اليمن، وظفار العُمانية، وجنوب المملكة العربية السعودية، وبعض المجتمعات السكانية القليلة في أقطار الخليج العربي كالكويت والإمارات وقطر، وكذلك توجد جالية مهرية صغيرة في بعض دول شرق أفريقيا كتنزانيا وكينيا. وحيث يقدر عدد الناطقين بها ما بين 200000 و300000 نسمة، هذا، رغم أنه لا يمكننا التأكد من العدد الفعلي نظراً لنقص البيانات المتفق عليها عن المجتمعات الناطقة بالمهرية.

Special characteristics

English: This collection relates to the dialects of Mehri spoken in al-Mahrah, eastern Yemen. This collection here can be compared to the archived collection “The documentation and ethnolinguistic analysis of Modern South Arabian: Mehri” (see http://hdl.handle.net/2196/e1220e3a-459f-4565-bb7c-5a748d01ef97).

This collection here has been created entirely by the local language community and the Mehri Center for Studies and Research, led by Dr Saeed al-Qumairi with Sa’d Musallam Kalshat, head of the documentation section of the Center, after training by Professor Janet Watson and Ahmad and Ali al-Mahri in Salalah and training at the language documentation workshop in Berlin.

Collection contents

English: Around 26% of the 374 bundles in this collection are audio recordings (96), and 74% audio-visual recordings (278). The total number of hours of recordings is around 25. The recordings deal with issues such as weather and the stars, water-sources, feeding and watering livestock, material culture, flora and their use, livestock and their use, toponyms, wild and domestic animals, harvesting the sea, camel culture, building in the past, archaeological sites, fire, personal stories and, in our recent material, ecopoetry. We are still working on the annotation; ultimately there will be around 10 hours of annotated data in ELAN, including transcription in Roman transcription and in the Arabic-based transcription developed by the DEAMSA project, and translation into Arabic and English.
