Showreel

Summary of the collection

English: This project focuses on the documentation of Negidal, a highly moribund Northern Tungusic language nowadays spoken by only a handful of individuals on the Amgun’ river in the Russian Federation. The language comprises two dialects, Upper and Lower Negidal, of which the latter, which used to be spoken on the Lower Amgun’ and Lower Amur, is already extinct (Pakendorf & Aralova 2018). The project will result in an extensive corpus of interlinearized texts from the Upper dialect together with accompanying audio recordings and some video recordings.

The project is being conducted in Lyon, France, at the research unit “Dynamique du Langage” (CNRS and Université de Lyon).

News from the project: In December 2019 we published a book with “Negidal fairy tales, stories, and traditions” in Negidal with a parallel Russian translation, which contains some of the most interesting materials from the archive up to that point. The book is freely available here.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anna Nadeina on 6 April 2019 and, less than a year later, of her daughter Ljubov’ Oxlopkova on 14 February 2020. We express our condolences to their families.

Group represented

English: Upper Negidal is practically restricted to the village of Vladimirovka on the middle reaches of the Amgun’ river in the Polina Osipenko district of the Khabarovsk Region, Russia, although in recent years two speakers have moved from Vladimirovka to the district centre Polina Osipenko (17 km away). Vladimirovka has a population of about 260, the majority of whom are Evenks, followed by about 80 ethnic Negidals. In addition, a few Russians and people of other nationalities live in the village. The language of communication both within Vladimirovka and with the surrounding communities is Russian, which is spoken fluently by everyone.

At the start of the project, seven speakers of Upper Negidal of varying proficiency were left: A.P. Nadeina (*1916), her three daughters D.I. Nadeina (*1942), G.I. Kandakova (*1945) and L.I. Oxlopkova (*1948), as well as A.E. Truba (*1947), A.V. Kazarova (*1950), and G.I. Kljueva (*1955). However, A.P. Nadeina passed away in April 2019, and L.I. Oxlopkova passed away in February 2020. Of these remaining speakers, the members of the Nadeina family used Negidal in day-to-day interactions to varying degrees, especially with A.P. Nadeina, whereas the other speakers have far less opportunity to speak the language. The recordings uploaded to the collection represent the speech of all of these last Upper Negidal speakers.

In addition, we have been able to add some heritage materials to the archive: D.I. Nadeina gave us old tape recordings of T.I. Nadeina (*1940), her older sister who passed away in 1999. These feature tales (often translated into Negidal from Russian by T.I. Nadeina) divided up into little lessons of Negidal that were broadcast on the regional radio. We have also been able to archive digitized tape recordings made in the 1990s by the linguist Nadezhda Bulatova as well as by the ethnographer Valentina Lebedeva. These comprise several tales told by A.P. Kazarov (*1921), who passed away in 2004.

П. Казаровым (1921-2004).

Language information

English: Negidal belongs to the Northern branch of the Tungusic language family, together with Even, Evenki, Solon, and Oroqen. Among these languages, its closest relative is Evenki (Cincius 1982), with which it shares many grammatical features as well as a considerable proportion of the lexicon. Intriguingly, traditionally Negidals led a semi-sedentary life based predominantly on fishing and hunting, while Evenks were fully nomadic reindeer breeders and hunters. This dominance of fishing and hunting in the lifestyle of the Negidals is shared with the other indigenous peoples of the Amur region, with whom the Negidals also share a common material and spiritual culture (Starcev 2014). Commonly, two dialects of Negidal are distinguished: Upper Negidal (Verkhovskoj) and Lower Negidal (Nizovskoj), which used to be spoken on the lower reaches of the Amgun’ and Amur rivers; this is now extinct (Pakendorf & Aralova 2018).

(Pakendorf & Aralova 2018).

Special characteristics

English: The collection primarily contains recordings of Upper Negidal made in 2005-2006 and 2007-2010 during two previous ELDP projects (grant Nrs ppg 0013 and mdp 0151) awarded to E. Kalinina, N. Sumbatova, S. Toldova, and V. Gusev. These materials comprise over 20 hours of audio recordings of texts of various genres as well as conversations featuring A.P. Nadeina and her daughters. This previously collected corpus has been supplemented by new recordings (audio as well as video) made by the current team beginning in February 2017. The new recordings focus particularly on genres missing in Kalinina’s collection and include all the known last speakers. In addition, as mentioned above, we have added several hours of digitized tape recordings made in the 1990s that feature two speakers who passed away in 1999 and 2004, respectively.

Collection contents

English: The bulk of the archive comprises annotated audio- (and partly video-)recordings. A session bundle for speech data minimally consists of an audio recording, a metadata file, an ELAN file with the transcription, morpheme analysis, and Russian and English translations, as well as a PDF file in archivable format with the same data as the ELAN file in textual form. For the newly recorded data – where the transcription and further analysis were based on the audio file extracted from the video – the session bundle additionally includes the original audio file made with an audio recorder, as well as a video file (in .mp4 format). Where available, additional explanatory materials like photos and/or videos are archived in the corresponding sessions. Furthermore, we have archived audiorecordings made specifically for the study of Negidal phonetics and phonology.

In addition, we have deposited some photos of the speakers and photos and videos of salient cultural activities in separate session bundles; these contain only the visual material and a description in archivable pdf format.

Lastly, we have also deposited scans of Ol’ga Konstantinova’s field notebooks which were kindly made available to us by the Institute for Linguistic Studies, RAS, Saint Petersburg. The notebooks contain transcriptions (under dictation) of Negidal texts with Russian translations and were collected by Ol’ga Konstantinova in 1961 in a settlement called Dyl’ma that used to be located on the Lower Amur. These texts, which so far have not been annotated in any way, represent the only Lower Negidal materials in this archive.

NOTE: The archive is a work in progress, and as such both our transcription and our glosses change over time. A list of abbreviations used in the glosses can be found in a bundle of the same name (genre: Notes).

All the written consent forms for the archiving and usage of the data signed by the individual speakers are archived together as a separate bundle.

Other information

English: Some words are left unglossed and untranslated in FLEx, and hence in the archived PDF and ELAN files they appear with asterisks. We do not gloss/translate words in the following general cases: 1) the word is a speech error; 2) it is unknown to the speaker who helped with the translation and we cannot find it in the Negidal-Russian dictionary included in Cincius (1982), nor in the Evenki-Russian dictionary compiled by Myreeva (2004); 3) it is speech uttered by the linguist doing the recording; 4) it is a long stretch in Russian. Furthermore, we did not gloss the vocabulary items repeated at the end of the Negidal lessons by T.I. Nadeina, since such repetitions do not belong to natural discourse.

Furthermore, in the glosses we indicate the origin of non-Negidal items as far as we are able to identify these. The abbreviations we use are: R for words of Russian origin, Evk for items of Evenki origin, Y for items originally of Sakha (Yakut) origin, Nan to indicate Nanai as a source, and Ulch to indicate Ulch as a source. These are not necessarily loanwords, but might also occur in code-switched stretches. Many of the words classified as being of Evenki origin are ultimately from Sakha – however, since they also occur in the Evenki dialects spoken in the Lower Amur area or on Sakhalin, we judged it more likely that they entered Negidal via Evenki rather than directly from Sakha. The same might be true for the items indicated as having Sakha as their source; however, since we were unable to find these in the Evenki dictionaries we were able to consult, we judged it safer to mark them as Sakha.

A special remark is in order about the Russian translation provided in the ELAN files: for those recordings for which the team of Elena Kalinina provided Russian translations, these were kept as is unless noted otherwise in the metadata. For all other recordings, the Russian translations are provided as they were given by our Negidal consultants. Occasionally, the regional variant of Russian spoken by our consultants differs from Standard Russian. We consciously refrained from editing the translations because such deviations from the standard might provide a more accurate rendering of some feature of Negidal grammar or lexicon (e.g. hesitatives), or they might reflect traits specific to the Russian spoken by the Negidal community. Occasionally, some phrases or even clauses present in the Negidal original were omitted from the Russian translation (which often was provided orally and only later transcribed); in these cases we added the missing parts in square brackets.

The English translation is not a mere translation of the Russian translation, but takes the Negidal original into account.

A word of thanks

English: Apart from being grateful to the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme for their financial and moral support of our work, we also want to thank the following individuals and institutions:

  • All the speakers who contributed to this collection by telling a story and helping us with transcriptions and translations. We are particularly grateful to Antonina Kazarova, Daria Nadeina, and especially Galina Kandakova for the innumerable hours of patient work on difficult recordings and on clarification of our questions concerning aspects of Negidal grammar.
  • Elena Kalinina, Nina Sumbatova, Valentin Gusev, and Svetlana Toldova for the Negidal materials that they recorded between 2005-2010. Without their hard work during the many weeks they spent in Vladimirovka, this documentation of Negidal would be incomparably smaller and less varied than it is now.
  • Nadezhda Bulatova and Valentina Lebedeva for letting us include the recordings they had made in the 1990s of A.P. Kazarov. These are invaluable materials, since he was one of the last traditional storytellers and is also the only male voice in this documentation.
  • Sof’ya Oskol’skaya of ILI-RAS for digitizing the old tape recordings, and Aleksandr Pevnov, also of ILI-RAS, for his support throughout the project.
  • Peter Fröhlich of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany, for digitizing the tape recordings featuring T.I. Nadeina.
  • The Institute for Linguistic Studies, RAS, Saint Petersburg, for giving us the digitized tape recordings featuring A.P. Kazarov as well as the field notebooks of Ol’ga Konstantinova for inclusion in the archive.
