Summary of the collection
English: Data principally from two main geographical groups of Mehri: Mahriyot, the Mehri spoken in far Eastern Yemen, and Mehreyyet, the Mehri dialects spoken by tribal groups within Dhofar, Oman, with some material from dialects spoken around al-Ghaydhah in Yemen. Mehri data from Dhofar is taken from a large number of geographical areas and tribal groups, including Hasik, on the eastern coast, Wadi Habrut, on the border with Yemen, the gravel desert villages of Rabkut and Dhahbun, settlements in the mountains which receive the monsoon rains, and from people who have moved to the main town of Dhofar, Salalah, from the mountains or desert regions. The language differences depend not only on the geographical location of speakers, but also on their tribal affiliation. Data has been collected from members of sub-tribes of Bayt Thuw’ar, Bayt Samodah, Bayt Kalshat, Bayt al-Afari, Bayt Za’banot, Bayt Kamṣayt and Bayt al-Qumairi.
Naturalistic and narrative data has been collected. The cultural topics covered include: personal (wedding, birth, death, clothes), trade, stories, songs, poetry, games, occupation, material culture, environment, animal husbandry. Audio data saved in WAV format. Audio-visual data saved in MP4 and MTS formats. The complete collection will include photographs, audio and audio-visual data, transcriptions and translations in ELAN, and a comparative cultural glossary. This material can be compared to that of ‘Community documentation of biocultural diversity in the eastern Yemeni province of al-Mahrah’, ‘The documentation and ethnolinguistic analysis of Modern South Arabian: Shehret’; ‘The documentation and ethnolinguistic analysis of Modern South Arabian: Harsusi’; ‘The documentation and ethnolinguistic analysis of Modern South Arabian: Hobyot’; and ‘The documentation and ethnolinguistic analysis of Modern South Arabian: Bathari’, and to the Mehri collection held at the Semitic Sound Archive, University of Heidelberg. This project was funded initially by the Diwan of the Royal Court, Oman between 1980 and 1990, and for the bulk of the work by a Leverhulme Trust project grant (RPG-2012-599) between January 2013 and December 2016.

English: Members of the umbrella Mahrah tribe, which is divided into a large number of sub-tribes. Data within this collection has been collected mainly from members of sub-tribes of Bayt Thuw’ar, Bayt Samodah, Bayt Kalshat, Bayt al-Afari, Bayt Za’banot, Bayt Kamsayt and Bayt al-Qumairi.

Language information
English: Different names include Mahriyot for eastern Yemeni Mehri, and Mehreyyet for the Mehri spoken by tribes based in and around Dhofar. It is currently spoken in Yemen, Oman and southern and south-eastern Saudi Arabia with communities in other Gulf states. The number of speakers estimated around 180,000 – 200,000, although we cannot be sure of the actual number of speakers due to lack of census figures for speaker communities.

Special characteristics
English: The whole documentation will include audio and photographic material collected during the 1970s and 1980s by Miranda Morris, funded by the Diwan of the Royal Court, Oman (1980-1990), as well as material collected during the lifetime of the project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust (2013-2016). All the Modern South Arabian languages are as yet unwritten. Part of the objective of the whole documentation project has been to encourage use of an Arabic-based script for the Modern South Arabian languages, developed by members of the team in early 2013, and to encourage SMS and email communication between speakers in the languages. English: Data from two main geographical groups of Mehri: Mahriyot, the Mehri spoken in far Eastern Yemen, and Mehreyyet, the Mehri dialects spoken by tribal groups within Dhofar, Oman, with some material from dialects spoken around al-Ghaydhah in Yemen. Collection history
English: The documentation project emerged from work by Watson on Mehri since 2006, work by Morris on the culture and languages of the Modern South Arabian communities since the 1970s, and enthusiasm on the part of the Modern South Arabian language communities. The languages and culture of the communities are severely endangered due to modern technology, communications, literacy in Arabic, travel and the increasing employment of workers from south-east Asia. The project was funded by the Diwan of the Royal Court, Oman (1980-1990), and by a Leverhulme Trust project grant (RPG-2012-599) between January 2013 and December 2016. The Leverhulme Trust grant has enabled the archiving of all material collected since the 1970s.

عربى: تأسس مشروع التوثيق بفضل أعمال جانيت واطسون في المهرية منذ العام ٢٠٠٦، وأعمال موريس في ثقافة المجتمعات العربية الجنوبية الحديثة ولغاتها منذ سبعينيات القرن الماضي، وبهمة السكان المحليين من أهالي مجتمعات اللغات العربية الجنوبية الحديثة. ولغات هذه المجتمعات وثقافتها مهددة بشكل كبير بسبب التقنيات الحديثة، ووسائل التواصل، والتحدث بالعربية، والترحال والتوظيف المتزايد للعمالة القادمة من شرق وجنوب آسيا. وقد تم تمويل هذا المشروع في البداية من طريق ديوان البلاط السلطاني العُماني بين عامي ١٩٨٠-١٩٩٠، ثم مُوِّل بمنحة من مشروع أمانة ليفيرهولم (RPG-2012-599) من يناير ٢٠١٣ إلى ديسمبر ٢٠١٦. الأمر الحاسم هُنا أن منحة أمانة ليفيرهولم قد مكنت الجميع من أرشفة المواد المجموعة منذ العام ١٩٧٠م جميعها.

English: About the deposit showreel above: This type of singing is a group performance in which the non-singing participants play an important role. The song describes a tribal feud in which one group were heavily outnumbered. This pdf is Abdullah Musallam al-Mahri’s transcription of the song into Mehri using the Arabic-based transcription system developed in 2013 by the DEAMSA team.
2018: The ELAN files at present in the archive represent the first rough draft transcriptions and translations of the sound files. As the depositors continue to work on their material, these will inevitably be altered and expanded, and errors will be addressed. For up-to-date versions of transcriptions and translations, or, in some cases, for detailed footnotes, the depositors can be contacted via ELAR.
Taghamk Afyat: A course in Dhofari Mehri: A set of sound and video files within this collection have been transcribed and exercises created from them for our collaborative coursebook on Mehri. The selected sound and video files can be accessed by users of the course.
The bundles and resource files in the collection are listed in the format DATE_LANGUAGEDIALECT_SPEAKERCODE_CONTENT. The date refers to the date of recording in the order YEARMONTHDAY. For example, 20130413_MehriMo_M005_sardinedescription refers to a recording produced on 13th April 2013, in Mehri in the Mahriyot dialect on the description of sardines.

English: In 2015, Abdullah al-Mahri and Janet Watson began work on e-books in Mehri. The first e-book was inspired by an English children’s book called The Saucepan Game, and produced in Leeds in 2015. This was based around a basketwork milk bowl, and starred Janet’s guinea pig, Jarvis. The second e-book was the Cradle, starring a young kid goat. This book was made in Rabkut in late 2015. More recently, Abdullah and Janet have discussed a series of books around a little boy called Selim. The first of these was produced in January 2018.
