Summary of the collection
English: The collection is a documentation of the Paresi-Haliti language (Arawak). This language shows clear signs of endangerment, especially in the inter-generational transmission of key oral traditions. Adopting a participatory approach, the documentation project aimed to provide adequate training to enable the indigenous community to work autonomously in collection methods, archiving, documentation and analysis of linguistic data. Intended results included audio and video recordings of chanted mythical-historical narratives, with their annotation, the enrichment of the present data bases and the starting of a discussion on a practical orthography.

Português: O projeto documentará a língua Paresi (Família Arawak), variante do Rio Formoso, falada na Amazônia Meridional brasileira. O Paresi tem, no momento, incipiente documentação. O projeto é de caráter participativo, isto é, proverá à comunidade indígena, a partir de treinamento adequado, autonomia em métodos básicos de coleta, arquivamento, documentação, e análise de dados linguísticos. Os resultados esperados são gravações em aúdio e vídeo de narrativas mítico-históricas, levantamento sociolinguístico, ampliação da base de dados lexicais existente, o início da discussão de uma ortografia e a formação em técnicas de documentação linguística de, pelo menos, um pesquisador-consultor indígena.

English: The language spoken by the Paresi (Arawak), self-denomination haliti (people), is spoken in approximately thirty villages in the northwest of the state of Mato Grosso, Southern Brazilian Amazonia. These villages in turn are distributed within ten indigenous areas – Parecis, Estivadinho, Figueiras, Juininha, Pareci, Ponte de Pedra, Formoso, Uirapuru, Umutina and Utiariti. The Paresi are composed of five ethnic subgroups: Kozarene, Waymare, Kaziniti, Warare and Kawali.

English: Paresi, also known as the Haliti language (Arawak), is a variant of Formoso River, spoken in Southern Brazilian Amazonia.
Diatopic variations are known to exist: at least two variants can be detected, a minority variant (in areas close to the border with Bolivia) and a majority variant in the remaining regions, as well as generational variations. Precise data on the level of knowledge of the language in the different villages is still lacking; Paresi-Portuguese bilingualism is known to be dominant and in some villages communication, even among the Paresi, takes place in Portuguese only. The Formoso village shows Paresi-Portuguese bilingualism, but, at the school, the children learn to write and to read only in Portuguese.
