Summary of the collection

English: This collection consists of audio recordings with transcriptions and photos of speakers of Chuxnabán Mixe, a previously undescribed language spoken in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, resulting from fieldwork conducted between July 2008 and March 2009.

Deposit contents

English: The deposit comprises over 70 audio recordings, transcriptions and Spanish translations of some of the narratives, and photos of the village and its surroundings. Genres include folk narratives, fables, and local history, customs and beliefs.

Español: El depósito consta de más de 70 grabaciones de audio, transcripciones y traducciones en castellano de algunas narraciones, y fotos del pueblo y sus alrededores. Los géneros incluyen narraciones folklóricas, fábulas, e historias, costumbres y creencias locales.

English: Glossing conventions for Narratives

The narratives were glossed using word-by-word translations as provided by the speaker without examining any bound morphology, as grammar analysis of the language has just begun. In cases where one Mixe word corresponds to more than one word in Spanish (i.e. to multi-word expressions, compounding, etc.), the Spanish words are connected via dots. In some instances, the Spanish translations of verbs reflect person, number, and/or tense/aspect; in others, the infinitive was used, depending on the translation offered by the speaker.

In all the narratives only two glosses were used:

• PST was used for the Mixe word oo or oojts which is the Past Tense marker
• FS was used for False Starts.

Español: Convenciones para las glosas de narraciones

Las narraciones se glosaron mediante traducciones palabra-por-palabra dadas por el hablante sin examinar la morfología ligada, ya que el análisis gramatical de la lengua se acaba de empezar. En los casos en los que una palabra mixe se corresponde con más de una palabra en castellano (i.e. con expresiones multi-palabra, composición, etc.), las palabras castellanas se conectan por puntos. En algunos casos, las traducciones castellanas de verbos reflejan persona, número, y/o tiempo/aspecto; en otros casos, se utilizó el infinitivo, según la traducción ofrecida por el hablante.

En todas las narraciones se utilizaron sólo dos glosas:

• PST se utilizó para la palabra mixe oo o oojts que es la marca del tiempo pasado
• FS se utilizó para intentos fallidos.
